What's all out there, DD, BD, gothic 1/2, morrowind, sacred, Anachronox, arx fatalis, blade and sword, lionheart, Blade of Darkness... any others? I haven't played gothic 1/2 or sacred yet, although they look interesting. I played morrowind for a few months but eventually got bored of it, it was almost too open-end, and I got overwhelemed by the ammount of open quests at any givin time; I'm also a mmorg player and felt that morrowind had a very mmorg like feel... without the benefit of being a mmorg. I also haven't played BD, simply because of starforce.
I'm gonna try sacred soon, but am I missing any??? Fairly recent games that is, circa 2000+. Just looking for single player rpgs that either have no party system, or if there is one, a passive style where you don't actually control your party members. I enjoy a rpg that can really immerse you in the role of a single person, so I guess that pretty much throws out all the D&D based games...

good question... one i will be interested with the answer and please... don't answer wizardry 8 (by the way i never found it )or Age of Wonders (i still think it is a real good game) because they are not really RPGs that "immerse you in the role of a single person" as DD or even morrowind ( i hate this game)... (well in a way BD is not either...)are... well there is Diablo 2 (I don't think you quote it even if you probably already knew it) more action than RPG (Hack 'nSlash anyway (personnaly i don't like))... i will be really interested with other answers (because in france RPGs (like fantasy anyway) are really subculture... more than in UK/US... Hong Kong & japan?)

sadly, there is a dearth of good rpg's as of the moment... we have no choice but to replay the old but good ones. you could try to keep abreast of rpg's thru www.rpgdot.com

I believe that I Of The Dragon was published in Russian and French already, though it hasn't come out in North America. It is referred to as an RPG. I played the demo and found it interesting and in some ways different. Nobody here seems to mention it. Have any of you played it?

You could always try this one....Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. It's cheap cos it's a few years old,2000 i believe it was released but you can get a new version that will play on XP as well as other OS.

You won't even notice it, nor you'll have to learn the d20 system (all you need to know is what the stats do). Try it. If you are looking for something special, try Beyond Good and Evil.

beyond good & evil? i hear from a friend that it's clunky at best when it comes to navigation. might as well get prince of persia, even if it's considered old.
oh heck, not that i play games like those.

There's also Temple of Elemental Evil If you're into D&D.

There's also Temple of Elemental Evil If you're into D&D. And if you're prepared to play something with basically no plot, lots of bugs, etc.

Hm ...
Considering that I've heard that the game is modelled after one of the very first D&D "adventures", does this mean (imply) that the adventure didn't have any reasonable plot as well ?
Well, it was basically designed as a "Dungeon Crawl", I assume, and therefore was mainly made for combat, I think.

I can recomend KOTOR. It's not an RPG in the true "role-playing" sense. You're very restricted in where you can go, it's really more like an adventure game with fighting and adjustable stats.... Still alot of fun though. Dungeon Siege is another one that nobody has mentioned.

Dungeon Siege--had potential, but ultimately was boring. Maybe the sequel will be better.

ToEE was a dungeon crawl module, yes, but it came with some background information and backstory that its PC incarnation utterly lacks, such as the prophecy concerning the temple, or the fact that some of the NPCs in Hamlet are covert agents. At the very least, in the original PnP module, you are given a sufficient reason to raid the temple; in the electronic version, you basically just go there and don't really know what you're doing, because the game has given you zero motive and practically no background information.

I'll throw in a good word for King of Dragon Pass. It's an RPG/strategy hybrid, and definitely unlike anything you've played, before--unless you're familiar with KOEI's excellent series of Japanese and Chinese fantasy/historical simulations. (They stopped making the series for the PC roughly ten years ago.) Basically, you're the head of one small tribe among many in the fantasy land of Glorantha. You have to consider a range of activities including farming, trade, exploration, battle, magic and magical quests, and inter- and intra-tribal relationships. Each of these involve anywhere from a few to several dozen choices at your disposal. The game is turn-based, with two turns per season, and five seasons per year. At the same time, the game runs a relatively randomized selection of plot activities drawn from 500+ in its database that force you to make decisions. Typically, there are five to six replies to any situation requiring your arbitration, none of which are solely good or bad. I've been very impressed with this game. Admittedly it's nothing like a dungeon crawl, but it has a drill-down depth and replayability that keeps calling me back. You can find out more about it here.

They didn't need to give you reason. The price tag on the game should be motive enough! That is unfortunate, though, that they left out the story. For me, that's what makes most games I play.
