According to the manual it says that 'because of the soulforging both chars will benefit from each others knowledge'

I've increased my repair skill on main char, but if I have an item on my deathknight that needs repairing I must give it to my main character first, or train in the same skill.

Is this correct as from how I have read the manual either char should be able to use that skill...

That is how Repair is suppose to work (or at least how it does work), though it is a bit of a hassle swapping items that need repair. With some passive skills like Identify (and maybe Trap Detection?) it does not matter who learns them.
