Is there any way to contact the assassin's guild without stealing Sir Peter's title deed? Sir Dante is a scuzzball and I really don't want to be doing him any favours. I've been putting this off as long as possible, but I'm reaching the point where I really don't have much else to do.

You don't have to join the assissin's guild. I assume you need this to find the Duke's murderer? That quest is not essential. You need either that quest, or assisting with the orc wars, or curing the plague to progress the plot.

It is not essential to have contact - but you will miss XP for the following quests =>

Duke's murderer (a quest given from a ghost)
Duke's murderer (the quest given from Com. Ralph => invitation to the castle.) An invitation is vital for the main plot, but you have 3 opportunities to gain them => 2x from Ralph (plague/murderer - and 1 from Gen. Alix/Mitox, after helping to erase the orcs and their water supply well)

Killing XP => as you erase the assassins <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

They are so easy to eradicate.
