i'm in the mirror room but i can't find the 3rd book. if i pick up the wrong one, am i hosed? also, what's the deal with the locked door? i take it i can't get back in the mirror room once i leave...

You can pick up the mirror image of the book without any problems. The one you want is back on the other side of the mirror, in the north east part of the room. Move your mouse around slowly, it is obscured by the eastern wall.
I don't think the locked door is openable. You are correct that you can not re-enter the room after you leave.

I teleported myself past the locked door (via hex edit). The only thing on the other side is a note, containing the text;

[color:"orange"]This area would have been filled up if the boss would have granted the story team more time and money... [/color]

Reading all 3 magic books places a spell book in your inventory, which in turn teaches a bunch of wizard elemental spells.
