as quoted from rpgdot.com:

Microsoft Game Studios today announced that Fable, the ground-breaking Xbox® roleplaying adventure game developed by Lionhead Studios, had an incredible launch month at retail stores in North America. Fable was the best-selling console title across all platforms in September, more than doubling the sales of the second best-selling title across the U.S. After its record-setting first week in which the game sold more than 375,000 units in North America, Fable has continued to demonstrate huge success with the best launch month ever for any Xbox game in U.S. According to The NPD Group, Fable sold more than 600,000 units in its first month at retail in the U.S. -- squashing all previous Xbox games' first-month sales records.

In Fable, the players’ every action determines their character's skills, appearances and moralities. Character's life stories are created from childhood through adulthood and on to old age. They can grow from an inexperienced child into the most powerful being in the world, spoken of by all and immortalized in legend. Players may choose the paths of righteousness or dedicate their characters' lives to evil; observing as they transform into reflections of their actions and decisions. Age leaves characters wizened, battle leaves them scarred, gluttony affects obesity. With experiences come advancement and physical change; whether it is by expanding muscles, a keen eye and nimble form or the buzz of magical energies around their finger tips. As players' characters develop, the world reacts to them and their actions. People comment on their successes, failures, appearances and behaviors. Their many opinions are expressed through applause, mockery, trepidation, panic and even flirtation. With each person characters aid and every creature they slay, the world is changed forever. In Fable, gamers decide: “Who will I be?” For more information about Fable, visit the official site at http://www.xbox.com/en-US/fable/default.htm. Fable is available in North America for an estimated retail price of $49.99 (U.S.).

this game may just put an end to the drought in the rpg market. unfortunately for me, i don't have an xbox.

but i might get one, all because of one game: jade empire. finally, an asian-themed rpg that looks very promising. have you guys seen the screenshots for jade? they look so very gorgeous. jade empire gets my vote for rpg of the year in 2005, even if it hasn't been released yet.

Ive heard that Fable is very good too, but, my console days are behind me,the game prices are far to steep for my liking and anyway i like being sat at my PC, It's my own little world.....maybe if they thought about plugging the console in to my PC screen??...Now that would be a good idea, No!!

Fable was a decent game but other then getting older there was nothing ground breaking about it.I beat it in less then 20 hours and i will not have another go at it as i was not to impressed.Maybe expectations got the better of me,but i would wait till it drops to 20 bucks its just not worth the 50 there is not enough gameplay in it to warrant paying full price for it.To me its a zelda clone with a few more options thrown into the mix.

I too heard that it was too short, and apart from getting older and your apperance changing due to alignment there wasn't much innovation in it.

Apparently Peter M who made it apoliguised for announcing way back in the early days it would have loads of certain features that had people drooling, but never made it into the final game.

I have an xbox and I resisted getting it. too many other games to be playing anyways.

After wasting my money on an over-hyped piece of tiger slapping nonsense called Black and White I've resisted anything since that has Peter Molyneux's name on it. He seems to see himself as some sort of innovation God, but what he delivers doesn't seem to match his own hype.

He actually made some sort of apology for talking up a whole lot of stuff that they failed to put into Fable. Here's part of it:

Quote

If I have mentioned any feature in the past which, for whatever reason, didn't make it as I described into Fable, I apologise. Every feature I have ever talked about WAS in development, but not all made it. Often the reason is that the feature did not make sense.

For my money, quite a lot of his features don't make sense, and many that do aren't exactly original. Still, I expect he has his fans.

There's no drought of RPG games on the market -- maybe on the XB, but not on the PC.

There's a lot of RPG's people are playing or have missed. Heck, I still ain't played either Divinity game.

I think what you might mean, now that I think about it, is not that many RPG's been released for PC this year. With Vampire: Bloodlines coming, I'm sure this is one to look at.

With the list of RPG's coming in the next few years it'll be RPG Heaven:
SW: KOTOR 2: The Sith Lords
NWN 2
Divine Divinity 2
Dragon Age
Bioware's other unknown PC RPG
TES: Oblivion
Whatever Arkane is working on w/ the Source Engine (I'd guess Arx Fatalis 2)
Gothic 3 (...if Atari will bring it to the US)
Bethesda's Fallout 3
The Fall: Last Days of Gaia
Metalheart (not sure how great it'll be)
Troika's Unknown Post-Apocalyptic RPG
Baldur's Gate 3 (who does Atari have working on it? Will it be finished?)

BTW, Jade Empire is rumored to might have a PC port, eventually. Bioware has YET to rule it out, when asked about it -- they basically said not to rule it out.

EDIT:
Since this is a Fable thread, let me speak on Fable. It looks cool and I've played it a few tiems for like 15 mins in a store, but some things I read in reviews make me scratch my head. I'm sure it's fun and all that, but some things sound goofy to me. I hope it gets a PC port, fixing issues I heard people complain about.

Some of the Fable concerns I have:
1.Forced to retry failed OPTIONAL quests -- I could see if it was a main quest and this happened to maintain the story, but an Optional quest? If I fail, I should live w/ my consequences (like Morrowind, if a person I'm escorting dies, that's my problem. If it's a main character who dies, important to the story, it'd warn me to load last saved game if I want to finish the main quest. )
2.The OPTION of Buying off alignment from Gods, making your actions pretty much worthless. Let's just buy the God off and wash away all my evilness/goodness! Like any other RPG, I should have to work hard to actually change my alignment.
3.It has a targetting system -- which I heard that it can results in clunkyness, in which it targets not who you would want it to (I'm sure a PC port could cure that by allowing Mouselook).
4.Game is said to be easy. (Having diffuculties added to a PC port sounds good.)

BTW, anyone know what the Fable 1.5 is that BBB has been rumored to have planned?
