This is just an FYI (For Your Information) in case anyone is interested.

Ad-Aware by Lavasoft, the older version 6, Free or Pro, will no longer update.
You need to grab version SE.

I just wanted to pass this along if anyone is interested.

What's the difference between SE and earlier versions ? Has it become commercial ?

nope it is just a better engine that runs the program, and thus they stopped supporting the older versions, this 1 is still free for personal use
Although personally I prefer spybot I have both, but becareful using both as ad-aware will remove the dummies that spybot inserts to fool the real baddies

It scans better now.
It is a bit cutesier in its look now.
It is a little more user friendly now too.

The Pro Version always cost money.

Yes, I think they are a bit commercial now.

It’s sort of like how freetradezone used to be with Electronic Hardware Data Sheets.
At one time they were free to download. They did this to build a client base and then they started charging for certain parts until everything costs money.

So is how things are.
I bought the new SE Pro Version.
It does the same great job it always did, but you need to upgrade to SE to continue to be able to grab the most recent definitions, since version 6 no longer updates.

P.S. Spybot is great too, like Mea said.
I use both at my job.

They are gonna do just the same for AVG antivirus:

On December 31, 2004, support for AVG 6.0 will be discontinued. All virus database updates, program updates, as well as technical support for the product will no longer be available after this date! In order to continue to be protected by AVG Anti-Virus, you must be using AVG 7.0.

When I have my birthday, Alrik Version 34.0 will no longer supported. You've got to use Alrik v35.0 , then.

chud, isn't it pointless to use both at the same time?

Ad-Aware kills off the spybot & will let u know the next time when the particular bot tries to get into your system.

Spybot S&D however will have immunization method that will leave the bot in place but paralyses it so that it won't do what it normally does. meaning ... spybot s&d creates dummies in place of the original bots so that the main progies that require those will continue to run.

one software negates the effects of the other, therefore rendering both useless.

Like chud, I also run them both. Find they complement each other quite nicely. I just don't use the immunization function of Spybot S&D...

I prefer SpySweeper myself. Not only does it scan for spy software and stuff, it also keeps running in the systray as a shield for when you're surfing. might be worthwhile to DL

After installing the new Ad-Aware SE Pro on all of the computers at my job site...

I must say it does a much more effective job than version 6 Pro.
Reason: It is much more effective now at finding Hijackers.
I must say I'm very impressed.

I've been using the SE version for the last month in work, and I'm well impressed also.

My computer got infected to such a degree it was almost impossible to work anymore so I had to find something to save it. That prog did the job!

viper, a cousin of mine used spysweeper & it causes quite a number of problems including refusing chat progies to do file transfers & also problems for some e-mail clients (sorry, can't remember the name). moreover i find it to be unfriendly (it claims simplicity without being simple, not much options).

Spybot S&D is still my preference as it's totally free; personal & commercial. Ad-Aware however is not free for use at work.

Read about an interesting site in a computer magazine : http://www.merijn.org
The magazine is quite serious, so I trust them for now.

I use PC-cillin and Spybot (decent active firewall in pc cillin stops a LOT of crap from comming in) and spybot i think is better than ad-aware.... it stops more crytical infections than ad-aware.... ad-aware i think has more focus on blocking visual-infections (more toolbars and visibly irritating stuff)

The other nice thing i LOVE about spybot is in its advanced tools (for those who actually switch to advanced mode), there is a system internal checker... which removes registry entries to missing files etc. some programs leaves a trail of destruction behind them.

Also the startup manager of spybot, tells you in detail what startup entries does WHAT, if they are needed, and if they are spyware related, virus related, or resource hogs. This is especially handy when you dealing with viruses that has names like "load power profile" or "systray" (both of which are VERY COMMON, spybot will tell you which one is the authentic one and which one is the virus).

I use Ad-Aware also, and I'm not complaining. I just need to find something that is for free to stop all the advertising and the E-mails with commercials and such. My mailbox is always full of it. I'm a cheapskate to you know!!
