Usually not being able to save is due to problems with cut scenes....
Before starting a new character, it would not be a bad idea to delete all of the files in the '
..\Divine Divinity\Run\Dynamic' folder. This folder is used as a cache for the game. Files are created / copied there from the save game folder when you load, and written / copied from that folder when you save a game. The files will be re-created as required the next time you start the game. A couple people have had problems with files from a previous game being carried over into the next.
The inv.* files keep track of every item you are carrying, every item in all opened/moved/identified chests, and the inventory of every NPC. Even were you to fix the save problem, you will not be able to complete some of the quests that you did in the previous game. For a safer way to transfer items (without random stats) to a different game, see the procedure in
Lost Items -guide and directory of inventory filesThe character stats, experience, etc (as well as your location and the location and status of all NPCs) is stored in the data.000 file.
