I used to have an RCA Lyra, but it slowly degraded. Some time ago, my father gave me one of his MiniDiscs. At first I was sceptic but now I think it's the best audio source: it's cheaper than the iPod, each 5$ MiniDisc can hold up to 5.5 hours of music.

Sorry, Death. I don't use a portable audio player and so I didn't vote. The most DRM free I guess. On my cptr I use MP3 and in the car--radio, cd and cassettetapes for some lectures I listen to.

I`ve got a MiniDisc-Player (sony) which is something about one year old now.
It`s easy for me to handle, although I`m not a technic-freak
The sound is good and altough i dropped it a few times it`s still working and not damaged

Bye, Hap

Hi Death I bought Emily a Sony NetMD player for her 12th birthday and i have got to say it is excellent.
Even with Anti-Shock my Sony CDplayer still skipped too often for my liking.
I realy want an iPod, but i am waiting for the ridiculous price to drop first.

death ol' chap, i picked the third choice & seemed to be the only one who does at the time of voting.

currently i use my Tungsten E handheld as MP3/WMA/OGG player with SD card for expanded memory. the reason i picked that option is that i find it an advantage over cd-based players which are battery hogs (u can have the battery almost drained with just one cd playback) & that u don't have skipping probs since the memory's solid state with almost no movable parts. & because there are no movable parts, the player itself can be very very small with no compromise over memory capacity & playback quality.

but for now, most audio players with built-in memory (128, 256, 512 megs) are non-expandable, which is sad. there are some though with memory slots, though the brands are unheard of & therefore warrants caution.

just like cleg, normally i would use my PC to listen to music (either with speakers or headphone). hey, i have to justify that SB Live audio card! thinking of upgrading to a 5.1 audio card just because i'm contemplating on getting Zalman 5.1 audio channel headphone.

That's greatly horrible things you say, old friend.
A sony CD player guarantees at least 40 hours playtime with one battery...

And I cant vote cause the poll isn't legal ..... since there's no Potatoe option and Barta would smack my butt ...knowing Barta that would be painful

Ok, I havnt voted, since the option i would go for, isnt really there... The closes i would get is a combination of 3 and the ipod.... but even that would be unaccurate.

Most of my music is stored on computer, my audigy2 is connected to the Hi-Fi (5.1) and the hi-fi has speakers routed through the whole house.... (most stereo, the living areas and my office is 5.1) If i need to travel and take music with... its easy enough to dump some mp3's onto a rewritable and take it with (Car radio supports Mp3).

Since its illegal in South Africa to carry coppied CD's (Music or Video) around, that you do not own the copyright to, i tend to only use 1 rewritable CD with Mp3's on, in the case of emergency i can always just lock my loader and claim that i am listening radio, which the player jumps to as soon as i lock the loader...

My car radio face moves down to reveal the loader, but i broke my eject button, and to fix it, mounted another button close to my gears that now ejects. Its a hidden button, so it suits me fine. They can eject all they like, IF they even get to unlock the face, so they can see the loader.

But i do think the pole needs an option for those of us who has more music than we know what to do with... mine wont fit on an ipod

Alright, let me clarify: when I say portable, I don't mean a laptop or an external computer hard-drive. I don't mean Flash Media, Compact Flash or a USB drive keychain.
I mean something you might listen to when you go to a store one KM away. I meant something you can put in your pocket and last time I checked, a car wouldn't fit in my coat, as well as a laptop and my home theather system.

Better ?

Although I very well can see this thread turning into "The Audio Poll".

lady rain, my brother's car player supports mp3 as well so he encoded all his cd's to mp3 so he can listen to just a few discs as opposed to tons of them which he has to carry with risk of them being stolen. in fact, i di the same to my cd's as well so i can listen to them whenever i use his car.

well, death, automobiles make us portable so it's in!

talk about the sony portable cd player, death, would u be so kind so as to tell me the model that actually last for up to 40 hours of playback?

lady rain, u pack serious audio firepower around your house! 5.1 channel, are u mad, woman? i would've thought it was the hubby with his silly toys for boys, the gadgets.

Just give me the old CD-player. It's difficult enough to know your computer, tv, DVD, video, microwave atc... that I really do not need something else that makes my life more complex. After all, it's just for playing music. Sometimes I use my computer to listen to lifestream radio and my cd-player for my favo music cd's. Don't even have the money to buy nick-nacks like I-pods and other stuff...

@ janggut

Hubby and i have a good understanding... He gets to buy & try any new gadget he fancies... as long as it improves my lifestyle too....

He wanted great sound for the computers, and DVD player / Hi-fi..... I bought 3 sets of 5.1 speakers (2 for computers, and 1 for the DVD player / Hi-Fi), and a set of speakers for each room in the house.... along wtih a central control unit....

His part of the game was installing everything and making sure that i can play music, from any computer, or the DVD player, to ANY speaker i chose in the house....

It took him 2 days of laying cables and cursing at the central control unit.... but once that was set up, we have never looked back.... its wonderful being able to turn on the radio and go anywhere in the house with music that you dont need to turn deafeningly loud to hear it in the bedroom.

( We had an electrician here to certify the wiring in the house... it took hubby 4 hours to explain to him which wires to ignore in the roof and why.... There are 7 Network points in the house, the "audio network", the TV's and decoders are also connected, and along with that is the intercom cables, the alarm cables and the CCTV cables. AT least hubby had the brains to colour code everything... otherwise i would NOT want to hear him when he tries to find a fault.... )
