I have no idea how I did it, but the game had crashed a few times and I had trouble quicksaving a few hours before. Later on, I checked the map and saw all the Black Shroud was gone at the locations of quests - like the House of Boratus, The Elven Burial Grounds...
I know these are quests because I played the game - so I tried to trigger the quests but then I saw some links were missing: Bronthion, the Elven Ambassador is missing and the Dwarves don't complain about anything being stolen...
Somehow - several (maybe all) quests have been solved without me doing anything and I'm unable to trigger them. Is there an undo for this?
(when I started the game, the map was all black)
Edit: I kept playing, entered the Council of Seven Meeting Hall and ... my god. There are no crystal balls to place in the statues (to see where the council members are...) !!!

Do you have a save from before you started having problems? A couple people ran into the black shroud being completely cleared as they entered a new area (fixed by reinstalling the game or replacing the effected shroud.* file in the saved game folder), but I have not heard of specific quest areas being cleared before. Did you reset the configuration after the game crashed? A couple people ran into problems with files from one game being carried over into another (so quest items were missing or certain areas cleared), possibly due to corrupt files in the dynamic folder. However, I don't think that would just effect quest related areas. (The ' ..\Divine Divinity\Run\Dynamic' folder is used as a cache for the game. Files are created / copied there from the save game folder when you load, and written / copied from that folder when you save a game. The files will be re-created as required the next time you start Divinity.) Was this the first time you entered the council hall that the crystal balls were missing, or had you already placed some/all of them in the statues? If it was the first time, do you have a save from before killing the succubus? If so, try making a copy of that saved game folder, then delete the world.x1 file from the copy. If not, just use a copy of your latest save. When you load copied save, the game will replace the missing file with the default version, which should bring back the crystal balls. The world.* files keep track of quest opened locations (which is why a save from before killing the succubus would be better) and items on the ground. Resetting the world.x1 file will effect both the council hall and Verdistis, so if you opened hatches, etc in Verdistis they will be sealed again. There are workarounds described in the topics; Game crash upon going to Verdistis / Game crashes when I try to return to Verdistis[color:"orange"]I tried to trigger the quests but then I saw some links were missing: Bronthion, the Elven Ambassador is missing and the Dwarves don't complain about anything being stolen...[/color] You need to get the council member quests to trigger the appearance of Bronthion and the theft of the stone axe. I'm not sure if just entering and exploring Boratus' cellar will trigger his appearance, or if you need to talk to the boar first. You shouldn't be able to get to the house without encountering the boar, though (the talking boar should approach in a cut scene as you enter that area of the Dark Forest; one place he can appear is just south of the warrior guild's teleporter platform).

I'll see if I have an "uncorrupted" savegame left ...
One thing did happen: Because there was some trouble with the quicksave option, I quickloaded and the game opened a quicksave from ages ago, trying to multiply the healing gem back in healer-town. Luckily I had a real savegame that could take me back to where I really was, but I think since then the shroud was gone.
I have seen the boar, and I got that quest, but I hadn't been to Boratus' house before though it was unshrouded on the map.
I didn't trigger the councilmemberquests because there were no crystal balls in the Meeting Hall. None at all. I had been there though, but I hadn't saved and got killed by the Succubus. My savegame took me back to Rivertown, and I decided not to go to the Meeting Hall again, but first solve some other quests. Maybe this has something to do with it? I don't know.

Quest information is stored in multiple files in the saved game folder, so it is possible that part of the game knows you have already meet the boar, so will not trigger the quest again, while information stores somewhere else was reset saying the opposite, so Boratus does not show up in his cellar.
If you had not moved any of the crystal balls, I'm not sure how they would be removed (maybe they are only placed there once the succubus is dead, but part of the game though that had already been done?). Reloading a save and waiting before going back to the council hall should not have made any difference.

Just checked if I had an uncorrupted savegame - my last one is right before I kill Iona's pet. Then I get out of the dungeon, to the Dark Forest and look - the shroud above all questareas (and the way to get there) is gone. So it's corrupted. Hell - this really spoils my gaming fun.
What can I do about it now, delete the Dynamic folder so everything has to be loaded again?
Edit: after the game crashed (sometimes it does - don't know why) I did reset the configuration. I do have one savegame from the last time I played the game as a Survivor (now I'm going for the Mage). I got into the Wastelands with the Survivor but then the savegame got corrupted or something and I started all over as a Mage.
Edit: There's also a shroud.x1 and .x2 in the savegame folder - maybe I should do something about these? I don't know - don't know anything about this kinda thing. Just... never mind.

If a corrupt file was written to the saved game folder, deleting the files in the dynamic folder will not help (it can't hurt to try, though). Different file extensions are associated with different areas of the game; .0 / .x0 = Aleroth, Ars Magicana, etc .1 / .x1 = Verdistis, Council Hall .2 / .x2 = Dark Forest If the entire fog-of-war is cleared in the Dark Forest, then it may be fixable (see Revealing maps). Which quests did you do before entering the castle? I still have my old games, so as long as we both followed a similar path, it may be possible to replace some of the files in your save with corresponding ones from my saves without causing too many other problems. Before going to the castle I had done most of the quests in Rivertown and Verdistis and cleared the Rivertown sewers.

Yeh, I think I've solved most Rivertown and Verdistis Quests, except for The Brooch and Shrimpo. I did clear Iona's Dungeon already and I retrieved the branch from the Dark Forest Tree.
Edit: Right. I removed the shroud.x2 from the Dynamic-folder and the world.x2 from the savegame folder. When I loaded the savegame, the shroud has returned, entirely covering everything. So that's ok I guess, don't think much else has happened. Went to the Meeting Hall, killed the Succubus but again, there were no Crystal Balls.
That seems to be the big problem, no crystal balls, and thus no Bronthion, no evil persons on the Elven Burial Grounds, no stolen Axe... I don't think I killed any of the Council Members...

Try deleting the world.x1 file (for Verdistis and the council hall) and then kill the succubus. The .x2 files are for the Dark Forest, so would not help with the crystal balls.

That did the trick. Everything back in order except... When the mage asks me to get a herb guarded by the evil tree, and I go out to seek it, it appears to have dissappeared. Oh well. No problem. Silly quest after all.
Oh and yes. In order to get the third part of the 'strange weapon quest' I should go to the Thieves Guild. Only, that door has been closed (by deleting the world.x1 file probably) ... is there an undo for that?

The herb and branch only show up beside the talking tree when you have the respective quests (you need the branch for Corinna's summoning quest in Verdistis). With the world file replaced, the herb that was placed on the ground got removed. You can get a replacement herb (it may be a silly quest, but the alchemist will teach you a level of Alchemy for it); Lost Items - guide and directory of inventory filesThere are a couple ways to bypass the re-sealed door in the thieves' guild, or you can use the fix above to get the holy dagger; FIX for the Missing Catacombs Portalor Teleporting Anywhere, via hex editor

Once again, something went wrong. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" /> This time, the dark forest area is going nuts. As I want to take out those rampant dwarves that destroyed the burial grounds, I come to a closed orc barricade. (which used to be open, I slayed all orcs there) At Boratus' house, the normal way to open the secret wall doesnt work anymore, I can shake the painting all I want, nothing opens. And although the alchemist in his little house told me to fetch a Talking Tree Branch, the tree only wants me ("you brute!") to go away, without giving me any of his sweet branches.
Should I really start teleporting for all these problems?

The quest-opened places and items directly on the ground got re-sealed when you deleted the world.x2 file from the save.
For the orc barrier, I recall someone tossed a teleporter through to get in, so that might be easier than using either the file swap or hex edit teleporting methods. Once inside you can just keep going until you clear that area, or exit and enter again with the teleporter stones.
There can be a slight gap where walls join in a north west corner, that you may be able to toss a teleporter stone through (ie you can talk to the mage Kistandalius from outside his shop, and see a bit of the interior). Unfortunately I did a quick check with Boratus' house, and if there is such a gap, it seems to be blocked by a stack of barrels in the north west corner of the room with the stairs down.
Whether you should try the file swap or hex edit teleporting depends on how much you want to complete that particular quest, how much you want to finish the game (if it is a required quest), and how adverse you are to starting over.
I can give you a world.x2 file from a save with Boratus' wall opened, the orc gate open and the herb / branch on the ground (placing this in a copy of your save should cause less problems that the default version that was used when you originally deleted the file). Have you been to the warrior's guild yet? By the time I got to the warrior's guild (probably the best save to use) I had explored everything to the north of there in the Dark Forest.

Well, I've been everywhere in the Dark Forest, although it's shrouded again now because I deleted that specific file. I'll try the teleporter-throwing, but can I get that file from you as well?
When I completed al those re-sealed quests, would it damage my game if I placed my old world.x2 file back, overwriting yours? Or would that just be too much trouble for nothing?

Here is a world.x2 file (1.3MB) from a save with the warrior's guild and everything to the north explored, the branch and herb beside the tree, Boratus' secret entrance opened and the orc camp gate open. I had not been to the dwarven halls at this point (or the stalker cave, etc), so the mine entrance will be sealed. It would not hurt anything to replace the world.x2 file, but it would not help much either (unless you left stuff on the ground you need). I had to redo a bit of the game to get the herb and branch on the ground with the two locations opened, and didn't bother picking up any dropped loot. Items with random properties will probably appear corrupt when you look at the description, since those properties are stored in a different file. It shouldn't hurt anything to just ignore these few items, but replacing your old world.x2 file would eliminate them (in addition to re-sealing the opened locations again), assuming you do not pick them up.

Frustrating and intriguing how all this stuff seems to disappear just like that. Since the first time it went wrong, stuff has been happening all along. Now these sealed places are open again, but stuff like the Axe of Stone and the Elven Items is missing. Then again, the letter to Gregor isn't.
Weird game. But it's allright, I've got all those quests completed now (with a little help from the Lost Items Zips) and I hope when I get to the Wastelands everything will be normal, cause it's a 3rd new world.

Two of the elven items should have been there, since I had not entered the cave at all. Maybe you need to talk to Josephine first, or something. I did not have the dwarven council member quest in the save I got this file from, so apparently the game did not place the stone axe yet.
Once you get to the wastelands there is a different set of files for that area, so you shouldn't have any problems.
