[color:"yellow"]Do you want to increase your modem speed?

There are two tweaks here.

[color:"yellow"]1st Tweak:

NOTE: These settings do work with other modems too;
however they may or may not work with your modem.
The only way to find out is to try it.
Also, after entering the Initialization String
your modem may sound different.
Don’t worry about that. That is normal.

Lucent Win Modem Initialization Strings

The Initialization String is the
letter, symbol, and or, number sequence after the colon:
(see below)

Lucent, Chipset Modems K56Flex only (V.90 off): S109=0
Lucent, Chipset Modems K56flex or V.90: S109=1
Lucent, Chipset Modems V.90 only (K56Flex off): S109=2
Lucent Technologies, 56k Flex: AT&F&C1
LT Winmodem 56kflex: AT&D2&C1X4V1Q0S7=70W1N3&Q5&K3S38=0
LT WinModem: AT&FX
LT WinModem 56Kflex: AT&F
LT WinModem 56Kflex: AT&F1&W^M
LT Winmodem 56Kflex: AT&FS=S10
LT Winmodem 56Kflex Enabled: S38=1
LT Winmodem 56Kflex Disabled: S38=0
LT Winmodem Limit Upstream: S37=14
LT Winmodem V.90 Enabled: -V90=1
LT Winmodem V.90: AT&FN3%C1
LT Winmodem V.90 AT&FS=S10

LT Winmodem V.90: AT&FX&C1&D2S95=1
LT Winmodem V.90: AT&F&C1&D2L3S95=3S11U
LT Winmodem V.90: AT&F&C1&D2&K3%C0-V90S37=0S38=8
LT Winmodem V.90: AT&D2&C1X4V1Q0S7=70W1N3&Q5&K3S38=0
LT Winmodem V.90 Enabled: AT&FX-v90=1S38=0S28=1
LT Winmodem V.90 Enabled: AT&FX&C1&D2S38=0
LT Winmodem V.90 Disabled :-V90=0
LT Winmodem Limited to 33.6: AT&FX-v90=0S38=0S28=1

[color:"yellow"]2nd Tweak:

Speed-up Modem and Serial Connections for (Windows 95/98/Me/XP)

Windows is normally limited to a default maximum speed of
115,200 bps for serial communications.
By using compression and high-speed UARTS modern modems
may reach this limit and not be allowed to operate at full speed.
This tweak allows Windows to communicate
with speeds of 230400, 460800 and 921600 bps.

However this can not be achieved without a Registry tweak,
because the maximum transfer speed (default) allowed
by Windows 9x/ME/XP is 115200 bps.
Enabled from:
Control Panel -> Modems -> Your Modem Name -> Properties -> General tab -> Maximum speed -> 115200 -> OK -> OK.

To enable and use a higher speed,
Open your registry and find the key below.
If you have more than one modem there will be multiple sub-keys
0000, 0001, 0002...000x representing each modem.
Check under each sub-key until you find the modem
you want to speed-up then continue with the step below.

Make a backup of "Properties" value before it is modified.
Then double-click on "Properties" and notice that
the 51st, 52nd, 53rd and 54th digits or
(the 7th up to the 10th digits on the 4th row
{the one that begins with 0018} show either “C2 01 or 84 03”,
which corresponds to a maximum connection speed of 115200 (or lower) bps. Highlight these digits and then change them to
"10 0e", do not change any other digits.
Click OK and exit the registry editor.

Now if you open "Control Panel -> Modems -> Your Modem -> Properties -> General" three new Maximum speed settings will be available:
230400, 460800 and 921600.
Select the required speed and test with you modem
to make sure it is compatible with the higher speed.

Once enabled open Control Panel -> Modems -> Your Modem -> Properties -> General and set the required maximum speed.

Note: Some older slower modems may not be able to operate at these speeds,
if your modem experiences problems switch back to a lower speed.

Good Luck

WinME !!!!!

As a faithful Windows user, even I refuse to use WinME!!!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ROFL.gif" alt="" /> I'm sure you can figure it out.
The path should be the same for WinME:
Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Modem

And you already know you don't really need these tweaks if you have cable. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
Shoot even slow cable is faster than DSL. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

The above tweaks are for the regular phone line type modems. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

(chuckle)

My Linux using friends poke fun at me about that too. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

The main reason why I posted this thread is because
some members here have commented that they have regular dial-up
and it takes forever to load web pages at times.
If they do these tweaks it will speed up those load times.
The tweaks will not speed things up super fast, but
it will get them pretty close to ISDN speed.
