As the title says, my computer reboots every time I exit the game. Needless to say that this is very annoying, and I'm sure it's not good for my system as Windows tells me after these resets that it has recovered from a serious error.

Any thoughts?

There are a couple of things that can cause this..... so lets start the process of elimination.

Firstly i need to know what computer it is.... Just basics.... Laptop / Desktop. If its P4. What OS (win XP / Win 98 etc)... what antivirus....

This problem is very common on Windows XP with Service Pack 1 loaded.
The following solution is only for windows XP with SP1. (with service pack 2, its all fixed up already)
To sort out this problem, apply the following patch from Microsoft.
Patch

Also try to update your Direct X to version 9.0c After that run the diagnostix and make sure that all the tests does not have any problems. (to run the tests, click on start... click on run.... and then type in DXdiag... In the utility that opens up, you can run all the tests available in there and see the results.... )

Also there are a major amount of hidden programs that can affect your computer's performance and stability.... they can infect files, causing your computer to restart when it cannot overcome an error. If you are not sure if there are other hidden programs running that may interfere with the game, download and install Spybot. This will remove most unwanted programs that crawled onto your computer without your knowledge and that has negative side effects to your computer’s stability. Spybot

Let me know if any of these make a difference.... otherwise we move on to the next level of trying to find the problem....

A fix would be best, but IIRC someone else had a crash on exit awhile ago, and was able to work around it by selecting 'new game', canceling out of the character creation screen and then quitting.

Lady_Rain, I'm pretty sure I have server pack 2, so that shouldn't be a problem. Direct X is also in order, I tried the tests, no problem.
I'll give brief specs, just in case: AMD 2500, 512 RAM, NVIDIA 6600 GT 128 MB, Windows XP Home Edition.

Raze, I tried your suggestion, but sadly it didn't work.

Thanks so much already for trying you guys, I think I'll just try and reinstal the game to see whether that helps.

Ok.... looking at the specs, there shouldnt be any hassles.... but there is one other thing that you can try.....

See what resolution you are running in windows, and make sure that it set to 16 bit (just to test this). When you run the configuration of the game, set it to the same resolution as windows.... and take fog out.... FSAA set to 0.
javascript: x()
Email
See if it still crashes.... A few people reported crashes when the computer changes resolution on either starting or exiting the game....

did you run spybot??? did you check for errors? and then fixed them???

I'm sorry to say nothing helps. Even a full reinstall didn't solve the problem. When I first got the game I didn't have this problem at all and now it does this. The only change my computer has gone through is the switch from a GeForce 4 TI to a 6600 TI. I guess it's not that card that causes the problem.
Well, thanks a lot again for the suggestions, I'll just try to get along this way.

I installed Divine Divinity again and for some reason the game runs very slowly, not at all like it used to! This problem combined with the Beyond Divinity one makes up for a strange situation, doesn't it? I mean these are the only two games I have a problem with. The only thing I can think of that sets them apart from the rest is that they have 2d elements in them (well that and the fact that Divine Divinity is the best game ever of course! ).
I guess the 2d take to the problem is a pretty stupid conclusion, but my knowledge of the technical elements of games is, to use an understatement, limited. I know the first things that should come to mind are Direct X and graphics drivers, and they did. I have the latest of all of those and I've tried many other suggestions, graciously provided by Lady_Rain and Raze.
Perhaps this predicament rings a bell? Anyone is welcome to share his/her thoughts!

In spybot (when you run it), there is a "mode" menu.... choose advanced... on the left hand side you will notice a "tools" menu in the game.... when you access that , choose "startup"

This will give a detailed startup listing. What makes this different from using other program's startup managers, is that it will give you a detailed description of what its used for, if it is nescessary and how it will affect your computer. (the details in a foldopen tab on the right hand side).

Take everything out that you do not URGENTLY need when you startup the computer.

Restart the computer, and see if DD and BD still doesnt run like they should... it may be that something is running in the background, affecting your computer's performance or video controlling.

If that does nothing to improve it... maybe you should have your computer checked by a technician.... it may be that the fan on your graphics card is either not working properly, or that the video card's memory is getting hot... a graphics card overheating has cause many performance related problems in the past, as the gard slows itself down to protect itself....

Lady_Rain, I was checking some of the configurations for my graphics card. In a list of features it said that I had Windows XP Server Pack 1, while I could have sworn I installed server pack 2 already. I immediately thought of what your first advice was and I installed that patch. Result: no crash anymore upon exiting the game!
I'm sorry for putting you through the trouble of coming up with other suggestions, but thanks again a million for all your help!

I salute you

Gad we could sort it out

That patch is very very important in most games...

Happy monster slashing...
