Do you have disk 2 in an optical drive?
The UK and North American English versions of the game do not use a CD key that gets typed in during install. The copy protection message referring to a CD key is a poorly worded error, most often caused by having the install CD (disk 1) in the drive rather than the play CD (disk 2).
The Australian English version uses a different copy protection, which does require a CD key, but it sounds like you have the North American version (since it was bundled with DD).
If you are using disk 2, try a different optical drive, if possible (the copy protection can decide that it will only work on one of the available drives).
Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before trying to start the game?
Did you install the
patch?
You could try updating the copy protection drivers;
Updating or removing StarForce drivers.
If all else fails, in the error message (either 'disk detection' or 'no disk found'), click the 'Information' button, then when that finishes, click the 'View Report' button. Save the resulting text file somewhere, optionally zip it, and email it to Larian (support@larian.com) with a description of the problem. They can create a file the copy protection can use to check your system on startup, rather then the play CD.
