i am trying to get the "strange" dagger in theives guild and i am in the verdistis sewers and have found the enterance to theives guild and the sewer door is locked and i fooled around with the torches (turning them on and off) to unseal the door-no luck-and i failed with lock pick 2 to unseal the door; i cannot pick pockets to join the thieves guild and i don't want to join. How can i get the sewer door open? thanks. rev.

The sewer entrance to the thieves' guild (as well as another guild) can only be opened by a lever on the other side of the door. The only way to get the holy dagger is to join the thieves' guild.

If you keep your eyes open when trading, you may be able to find an item with a Pickpocket bonus. Kistandalius in Ars Magicana would be a good person to check for rings or amulets.
There are a couple ways to cheat yourself into the guild (one or two), but that would probably defeat the purpose of not wanting to join.
