Intuitively I had expected such a similar outcome - with something around 50 %.

Well, I wonder what's going on in the next weeks ...

maybe France is considering joining Asia since Australia is still sitting on the fence wondering if they're European or Asian. as for New Zealand, the question has been put to rest; they're Middle Earth.

they all know it's about the new european law, but do they have a clue what's in it?

It was a voting about the european constitution. 25 countries must voted with yes to accept the european constitution. France voted against the constitution

Great text, hardly understood any of the important words !

What does it mean? In reality? If they'd voted yes, what would have happened in France then?

this would mean all european countries will have the same constitution, with different cultures, it's not evident that it will suit all those countries. But it should be no problem for France...

Aparently most voted against becouse the goverment was pro.
And the French goverment of today is not so popular... to say the least.
A lot of ppl just wanted to get back at the goverment. Some voted no even without knowing what it was about.

Untrue
The french people who voted no yesterday made this choice because they did not agree with the new european law.
The president Chirac asked to the people for voting yes but in the Opposition, the main leaders as Lionel Jospin, also asked to the people for voting yes.

Do you mean that the french people are stupid and that they can't understand the texts of the new law ?

In france the government let the people choose by themselves.
It's why there was a referendum yesterday.
In some other european countries the people did not have any choice because their parliament said yes to the new law without asking them if they agree or not.
With this referendum our government made something intelligent and good.

Maybe the belgium people or the german people think that the french people are stupid for having voted no and that they are unable to read but it is our own choice and i am proud to be french.

Spain 20 February 2005 Yes: 76.7% Consultative Referendum
France 29 May 2005 Referendum
Netherlands 1 June 2005 Consultative Referendum
Luxembourg 10 July 2005 Referendum
Poland 25 September 2005 (proposed) Referendum
Denmark 27 September 2005 Referendum
Portugal October 2005 (proposed) Referendum
Ireland Late 2005 Referendum
Czech Republic 2006 Referendum Proposed
United Kingdom 2006 Referendum

Only 10 countries have a referendum.
Spain has voted yes and France no.
Wait and see for the votes of the other countries

Actually
It ware French goverment leaders themselves that said that they ware afraid people would vote no becouse people wanted to get back at them.
It's been all over the news.
And there have been intervieuws on tv with people who said that they voted no becouse they don't like and don't trust the goverment.
So what I said is true !

And fyi personally I think a referendum is great. The Belgian goverment is prolly to scared to organise one.

Yes?
I'm just saying what I seen on tv news and read in newspapers.

*edit*
It's even on the news now.
"French no causes big political crisis"

The goverment will change. The prime minister will have to go. He was unpopular.

Don't believe everything you see on TV news or read in the newspapers.

Yes the french government is not popular.
Yes the Opposition would have a lot of chances to win if there would be elections today.

But yesterday the vote was Only against the european constitution.

55 % of the french people think that this constitution is not good.
