The Official Strategy Guide shows armor that is available, and says that “…the Ranaar armor is one of the better pieces of armor….” Its required strength is 40. Later on the Guide says, “In general, about 50 should be enough for most equipment.”

For most equipment, maybe that’s true. But I’m only in Act II, with characters at level 19, and already the Battlefield merchants have offered for sale two items requiring strength of 56 and one requiring 60. The one requiring 60 was a pair of boots.

All three of these items were of excellent quality. I forget what the first item that required 56 was, but the second was a suit of armor, Shark’s Shadow Armor of Reflexes, which I bought. Its AC is 15 (as opposed to the Ranaar armor’s 13), it has a low speed penalty (-4), it has eight miscellaneous boosts, and it has a charm slot.

Maybe these items showed up for sale because of my high Luck (at 62 when the Shark’s armor appeared). But I don’t think so. Or maybe they appeared because I’m playing Very Easy. I don’t think that’s so either.

I do think my melee hero needs more strength than 50.

The estimate of 50 was only intended to be a rough guide for the strength you would need to use decent equipment. Various bonuses can raise the requirements from the base values for that type of equipment, so I don't know what the maximum values are (I suspect 60 is pretty close).

I didn't check the BF merchants very frequently for equipment (relying mostly on dropped or found loot), but it is reasonable they could have the best equipment, with higher requirements than what is available in the main game for that act. At the beginning of act 3 my highest strength requirements were in the low 30s, while at the start of act 4 I had a belt with a strength requirement of 51 and a few pieces of equipment with strength requirements in the mid 40s. Near the end of the game I had a couple pieces of equipment with strength (or agility) requirements of 56 or 57. I don't recall finding very many pieces of armour that I could not use within a level or two, but did have to hang onto a couple weapons for awhile.

Thank you for the reply, Raze.

For your information, I am currently using an excellent one-handed ax that requires a strength of 76. I believe I bought it from a Battlefield merchant in Act III, probably Olaf, maybe Brian.

Strange. In the Sword of Gods only takes 35 strength (and 30 agility).

I do not know how much, if any, difference the difficulty levels have on what items appear. I am playing Very Easy. Here are the stats for the ax:

Speed: 9%
Accuracy: 9%
Initiative: -6%

If you tell me that's not an axe from the game, I'll believe you.

arg the things i would do to prove something.... *shakes head profusely*

I actually just installed BD again (my computer was formatted about 2 weeks ago), just go go hunt through the files for that axe.....

Here is what i found....

Quote
translation "Suffix_Magic_Accuracy_Weapon_Large","of the Hawkeye"

Under the list of suffixes, there is a entry of exquisite….
Ranaar is listed under the “large” section
And I think that Axe is a weapon

So judging from that… that sword DOES exist 

Well, if it helps: it's much appreciated
So this weapon does exist and it looks like it's a damned good one
