Thank you so much, Killerzzz. I'm sorry that you have to go through all the trouble just to help me.
'One of the greatest joys in live is making others smile.'
Who am I quoting? Myself. Also, sharing your knowledge with others is much fun too. Trust me, I'm probably enjoying this even more than you will.
All right, here we go: The step-by-step guide to making two Diablo II folders with differnt patches at the same time. I will put alot of stuff between 'this', they are not part of the folder names.
Please note, you must do this before installing the patch further than the old one you want to keep. You can get any patch you want on the Diablo II website (but you can't go backwards uless you uninstall and restart).
Note still that I extreamly highly suggest that you make a spare copy of your Diablo II folder somewhere safe before commencing. I know this whole thing takes alot of Gigabytes, but its worth it if you have the space.
1. Go to 'My Computer'.
Go to your 'C:' drive (or whatever your main drive is named).
Go to 'Program Files'.
2. Right-click on your 'Diablo II' folder, and select 'Copy'.
3. 'Paste' your copy in the 'Program Files' folder. It should automatically be named 'Copy of Diablo II'.
4. Now you can name it anything you want, other than 'Diablo II'. Call it something like 'Diablo II (patch 1.09d)'.
5. Now you have two Diablo II folders : 'Diablo II' and 'Diablo II (patch 1.09d)'. You can have a shortcut for each one on your desktop; make sure you name them diffently, of course.
6. Go and Install the new patch by either connecting to Battlenet, or dowloading the patch on the Diablo II website. It will only update the Diablo II file that is still named 'Diablo II'.
7. Now 'Diablo II' is running under version 1.11 (if thats still the newest one) and 'Diablo II (patch 1.09d) is still running under version 1.09d (if thats the patch you copied it at).
8. If you open the game in the 'Diablo II' file, you will have all your old characters and you can start new ones in the new patch.
If you open the game in the 'Diablo II (patch 1.09d)' file, you will have all your old characters and you can start new ones in the old patch.
9. All the new characters you make after this point will only appear in their own files: so new characters made under 'Diablo II' will only be in 'Diablo II', whereas new characters made under 'Dibalo II (patch 1.09d)' will only be in 'Diablo II (patch 1.09d).
10. If you like, go in your 'Diablo II' save folder, and delete your old characters there since they will still be in the in 'Diablo II 1.09d'. BUT! DON'T DELETE THEM IN THE ACTUAL GAME BECAUSE I'M NOT SURE IF THEY ARE NOT EFFECTED IN BOTH FOLDERS. So what I said earlier about the new characters for the old patch only appearing in the old patch folder may be inaccurate. I'm not sure.
11. If you don't delete your old chars in the 'Diablo II' folder, than I highly suggest that you don't use them in the 1.11 patch folder. Like I said before, it may still effect your other folder.
12. Now, have fun. Thats the last and most important step.
So thats it. Enjoy. If you have any questions about this guide, just ask.
