You can bring a bottle of Rimmer's ale to the major: if you talk to him after doing that, he will give you a password you can use in the dwarven mines.
Without giving you any spoilers, I can tell you that bringing the beer won't solve the quest: you have to do some other things after talking to this dwarf.

I copy this from Kiya's website:

"After you have gathered 5 members, Eolus will be the 6th. You have to ask Zandalor, look into the scrying statue and really SEE the Axe memorial in Glenborus/East Rivertown area, then you're ready for this quest.

Go to Glenborus, meet Eolus and learn about the stolen Axe. Talk to the imprisoned elf Arandalis and the drunken mayor Gregor. The dwarf is an alcoholic, you can bribe him with Rimmer's ale to tell you about the secret password (prophecy) in the Dwarven Halls/Dark Forest (talk to the elf, then get the ale, then talk to Gregor again - further details in the large pics 9, 20) - Go to the Dwarven Halls (mines in the SW area), find the entrance to the 2nd mine level - fight or talk with the sentry - fight the evil dwarves and Moriendor."

Follow this order and everything should work just fine.
You did install the patch, right?

You should be able to talk to the mayor, offer him some of Rimmer's ale, convince him you are friends since you are drinking together and get him to reveal the password. However, don't worry about not getting that to work. You receive more experience killing the guardian in the mines than you would from using the password, and it is an easy fight.

No it won't. Install the patch, it's always better to do so.

I don't think this particular problem is patch related, but the patch will add a second quicksave slot (and you can increase that number) and various technical fixes, so it would be a good idea to install it anyway.

The patch will work fine with existing saves, though some of the fixes and changes only apply to new games. For example, in an unpatched game Finnigan's magic lockpicks (a quest in Verdistis) will break if you use the Lockpick skill with them in your inventory, and will disappear if dropped on the ground. These lockpicks should be unbreakable, and give you an agility boost while in your inventory. If you install the patch after they break, they will be placed back in Commander Kratus' desk, to be re-stolen. If you install the patch after the game is started, the magic lockpicks will no longer break (so you don't have to carry around a stack of normal lockpicks), but will still disappear when dropped on the ground. In either case, you have to choose between returning the magic lockpicks to complete the quest, or keeping them to use yourself. If you install the patch before starting the game, the lockpicks will not break and can be safely dropped on the ground. You can also complete the quest, and then buy them back from Finnigan.

Make sure you have:

- The Dragon Breastplate itself (obtained from Sir Patrick after having returned the Axe of Stone to the Dwarves).
- The Dragonheart Gem (obtained by finishing the second Warriors' Guild quest).

If you have these two items, Grisha should tell you he'll assemble it for you.

The armour you mentioned in the spoiler is not necessarely much better. Even if it was, I don't like the fact that it's invisible. It just looks so silly having your hero wear full plate leggings and a helmet, but appearing to have a bear chest.

You do not need the dragon gem for the Silver armour, which gets upgraded to the (invisible when equipped) Larian armour in the easter egg area. In my case I found the dragon armour to be a little better, but some have had the random stats favour the silver/Larian armour. Also, some people prefer the Larian armour because it is invisible on the character (for example, mages would not look like they were wearing platemail, but would have that level of protection).
