Anyone know? I know you will attack first each round with high speeds but does it affect the number of swings per round? Also does weapon type affect speeds like knife vs 2 handed hammers.

Also what does the armor stat do? If i got an boot with 2 armor and a boot with 6 armor what will be the difference?

Yes, the speed stat helps both your attack rate and recovery rate after being attacked. For archers, the Reload Time portion of the bow/crossbow expertise skill gives a direct bonus to speed (I put the most skill points into Reload Time for my archer, and just a couple into damage, accuracy and point blank).

Each weapon should list any speed penalties or (sometimes) bonuses. Different weapon types do have different ranges of base speed penalties, but random stats can effect that. Knives and daggers have a base speed penalty of 2% while hammers are 8 or 9%.

I'm not sure exactly how the armour class is used in calculating how much damage you take when hit. Higher is better, but if there was not a big difference when selecting armour, I went more with the bonuses on the equipment than just considering the armour class alone.

I quote the game's manual:

Speed: Being fast pays off in regard to evading attacks, taking initiative and recovering.

Armour: Armour determines your overall resistance to damage.

any idea of how exactly speed work? How much attack speed is gained through each point of speed?

I never bothered to figure out an exact relationship between attack rate and the speed stat, since any particular fight is also going to be influenced by your other stats, as well as the stats of your opponent.
The next time you level up, save the game before distributing your stat points, then play for a bit so you can fight a series or group of creatures. After that, reload, put some or all of the points into speed, and repeat. With just a couple of points you might not notice a huge difference (except at the start of the game), but it should make the fights a little easier.
