I'm finally coming back to DD after a long hiatus and I have run into problem after problem. One of which seems related to the Troll King. I've been doing some experimenting and here's what I have so far:

1) enter troll cave, trigger cutscene but don't kill the king - game works fine
2) after 1, re-enter the cave (you don't even have to kill any trolls, just going back in seems to do this). come out and the game will crash either as you initiate conversation or get near an npc. Actually, the game crashes pretty constantly, giving an error in div.exe.

I've tested this scenario out fairly extensively. I have a savegame after 1, but before 2. everything is great as long as I don't enter the cave. Once I do (and come back out - either walking or teleporting), the game becomes unplayable.

I'm now trying to do this the "correct" way by talking to Homer before entering the cave, will update as I finish.

Sorry if this is a known issue, I did a search on "troll" and didn't find this specific scenario mentioned. Just a heads up for those thinking about going back and replaying this game...

Edit: Talked to Homer and got the quest like normal. Entered the troll cave and attempted to clear it - got halfway through and the game crashed straight to desktop.

Next, I just entered the cave - did not trigger cutscene or anything, just went in. Game crashes straight to desktop shortly after I leave.

If I turn on software rendering, I can see an error message in div.exe at offset 0015b9xx (xx seems to change). Guess I don't get to do this quest, or even take the Troll King's 1.2k gold. Funny thing is that I'm *positive* I did this quest in my unpatched game back when it was new.

This is not a known issue, but there was a similar problem reported awhile ago, where the game would crash after the troll king froze the character. They restarted the game, and did not encounter the problem again.

For some reason getting the quest to kill the trolls is exacerbating the problem with that area. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

Check your PM (click 'My Home' in the top menu bar, then 'Received Private Messages').

I think you're right that the problem is in the Slow/Freeze spell the Troll King throws out. Just did a quick test - ran down into the cave, got slowed, teleported out and tried clicking on the "Ruined Armor" near the cave and crashed. On the next load, I ran down, triggered the cutscene and teleported out without getting slowed. Walked to the Ruined Armor and was able to click on it without any crashing.

My next test will be to see if I get crashes after some generic troll bashing. Since the King doesn't key on you until you're pretty close (and doesn't move randomly), should be easy to clear the cave all except for him.

Worst case scenario (if indeed the spell effect is what is causing the problem), I can do some save/load exploiting to try and beat the king without being slowed <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

You say they "restarted the game" - does that mean they started a new game, or just reloaded?

EDIT:
I don't think the freeze spell has anything to do with it - I just ran into the cave, triggered the cutscene and ran around a little bit (trying to pull the King to the back of the cave) and crashed before I was able to teleport out. I hadn't been slowed at that point. :sigh:

The only definite thing I can say is that going into the cave is causing problems. I haven't been able to nail down if triggering the cutscene is causing the crashes or not. Also, the crashes seem to change. I haven't been getting Windows message boxes telling me what module caused the crash, but generally it was either div.exe or "unknown" - lately, I've just been dumped to my desktop instantly. The crashes on item interaction are generally in the div.exe file and the totally random-while-walking were "unknown" - but I can't be 100% sure of that.

The thing that really worries me is if this isn't isolated to the troll cave.

I loaded one of my old saves to double check, and only the troll king should be visible when you first enter the cave. Once you near the section of the cave he is in (ie get within about 3 times the character height from him), the cutscene conversation is triggered. When that ends, the king turns hostile and the other trolls fade into existence at several places around the cave.

It seems that your game is placing the regular trolls there too early, which may or may not be part of the problem with the game crashing. You could try running past the trolls and not attacking any until after the conversation with the king.

They started a new game: Constant desktop crash.

Your save appears to work fine on my system, and I was able to clear out the troll cave and do some other running around without any crashing. The problem may be something in the game files, or a conflict with something in your system. Try the file verification method in the topic;

I can live without playing if I have to start over. I'll definitely need a break from this, I won't be able to enjoy the game clearing that first dungeon again - what a pain. And especially after having just done it..

I did the file verification check and i have a couple of my .idc files that don't match, warma.idc and warmc.idc. I didn't see them on the cd's, so I assumed they might be specific to my system (like the config files).

I do realize those are two files just happen to relate to my particular class/sex, and could possibly be corrupt, which is why I looked on the CD.

I didn't mind the catacombs too much my first game, but even after a break they got a little tedious when I started another game as a survivor archer (rather than melee warrior).

These files are on the play CD, in the '..\disc3\indeces.rar' file. Try extracting them manually, and see if they match after that. If so, try your save before the troll cave, to see if they were the source of your problems.
