The charm pane is likely opening off screen. Since you are already playing at 1024x768, you can edit the config.div file to play at a higher resolution, such as 1280x1024 (it is a text file, so you can open it in Notepad, etc to edit it). After you start the game at that resolution, open a charm window, move it in to the central area of the screen and then close it, you may want to quit the game and restore the previous resolution. The game itself is fine at higher than supported resolutions, but opening the auto-map can cause the game to crash.
