Okay I screwed up and I know it but I;m sure someone can fix it. I'm computer saavy enough to know a bit more than your average PC/Videogame user. I like to learn about Hexidecimal and as such I have a habbit of opening .DAT files and messing with them.(I always back them up first.) Heres the trouble though. for you computer saavy people this will be a breeze to understand.

knowing that .DAT file extensions do not have an associated program to open them with outside the game im fond of using the Right-Click open with command and either using my hex editor or my notepad program. when this box opens the list of programs for you to choose there is a checkbox that you can check or uncheck accordingly to ALWAYS ASSOCIATE THIS TYPE OF FILE WITH THIS PROGRAM.... somehow or other I managed to click the dam thing and now all of my .DAT files are associated with freakin notepad. sure im saavy enough to know what to look for but when it comes to knowing how to UNDO that particular action I'm clueless..Help!!!

BTW the change has not affected my game and it still plays just fine.

In Windows 98 (XP may be similar) you can open Windows Explorer, click the 'View | Folder Options' menu, switch to the 'File Types' tab, and then find the 'DAT File' entry to remove or change it.

There are some file management tools listed on this page, one of which is for managing file associations. I have not tried it, but it should be able to delete associations.

You may want to add a shortcut to Notepad in your Windows\SendTo folder (so you can use the right click 'Send To' option to open files, or leave a shortcut on your desktop (to drag and drop files onto). There are registry edits (and probably programs, search Google) that will let you add an 'open with Notepad' option directly to the right click context menu, which would save you a couple steps and avoid accidental associations.

If you right click on the file( any .dat), then go to properties you will notice a "opens with" and then the program listed...

click on change and change it to whatever you want....

if you want it NOT to use a known program (want windows to ask you what you want to use to open it (like it used to)...

then instead of right clicking on the file.... open my computer (or any thing like my documents ....)

click on tools >> folder options >>

selct the file types tab

in the list that comes up, go find the .dat and DELETE the extension...

windows will now be as clueless as before <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
