Alright.. Either I'm in the wrong place, or this game is just disturbingly hard.

I just made my first character, a warrior, and I'm wandering around the catacombs in the first town. The random skeletons don't prove to be much of a problem, but those red skeletons kill me in virtually one hit. And there aren't enough excess monsters to gain exp from to build up my clvl. I've almost given up all hope. I've spoken with everyone in town and I can't seem to find any quests.

Am I supposed to do the catacombs 'later' and I've just missed some other side quests, or is this game just evil?

I think you can get up to level 3 just be completing quests in the town. It's a very handy boost early in the game.

And the catacombs is the first place to be. Don't leave the town until you've done them. It just gets harder.

You can use ranged weapon or magic to get rid of them. "Meteorstrike" can be very handy when you face those semi-bosses. You won't regret it.
The game is hard if you try to melee in low levels and very easy if you attack from a distance. Try and kill those monsters, you will gain unbeleivable amount of XP.

Ok.. so I've managed to complete the 'combs through massive health potion stocking and irritatingly frequent reloads. Now I have a new problem.. how do you kill those orc war drummers? Every time I hit one, they immediately heal themselves. I do hope it's not skill related.. I kind of had my heart set on making an actual 'fighter'.

if you don't wish to use any spells from the wizard tree, an investment in 'Stun' is probably worth it - that or try getting a weapon with either stun or freeze on it.

As I'm not very lucky in having a frost weapon at the moment - I'm using freeze, the mage spell (my first go as a warrior). I've got stun lvl 3 and it does not help very much (maybe too lowleveled in my game).
Orcs don't like poison, have you tried throwing a poison bottle on him or using poison skills on weapon and skin?

I am a warrior and I use freeze skill for bosses. Very handy.

Hi,

I'm fairly new to the game as well. I also started with a warrior. He is now lvl 45 and I'm about to finish the game (I think). Anyway, here is what I did in regards to the war drummers.......

I RAN away.

Killed all the other orcs that I could for the exp. and later, since I had to go back to most of those areas at least once anyway, I had a little revenge session and took 'em out. Hey, exp is exp.
So far in my experience with the game, having a weapon that has frost dmg on it helps greatly. Plus, I didn't have to waste any points on a freeze spell.

If I was to give simple tips on a warrior build, that is purely warrior (which IMO is nearly impossible) I would suggest these to start as soon as you can use them:

Augment Damage
Augment Defense
Choose one weapon mastery and stick with that
Repel damage
and at least one point in one of the elemental damages (I chose Lightning)

Again, in my experience so far, once you start gaining lvl's and finding better gear, skill points can add up fairly easily. Also, as mentioned, making a purist warrior is going to be very difficult. Somewhere down the line, you are going to need some form of spell or other class skill. For another example, I now have a lvl 5 lockpick. No more searching for keys (for the most part) and if it can't be opened with that skill, chances are there is a lever somewhere. Very few times have I had to have a "specific" key for an area. Lockpick wasn't neccessary, but it saved me time with looking for keys, and that's how I prefered to build my charactor.

Hope this is a little help.

the thief skill poison weapon used on a bow totally destroys any orc including the drummers. The poison makes em go into that hiccup state so he's technically stunned..and every arrow just keeps on piling more damage and poison. (i only have 1 point in the poison weapon atm..that's 10 charges on your bow...and was enough to kill the "heavy giant orcs" in 2/3 hits).
