I rarely used Sneak and never tried Backstab, so I don't know how well they work together. Sneak is apparently useful with a ranged attack and hit and run tactics.
At least for the first 10 levels, Sneak reduces the sight of an opponent by a factor of the level (ie sight/level); after the first few skill points are put into it, you start to get diminishing returns.
