Check the number of files in the saved game folder (in '..\Divine Divinity\Run\savegames'). There may be a quicksave folder with a .tmp extension, depending on when during the save process the game crashed. If you have been to the Dark Forest the save folder should contain 32 files, otherwise 27. Missing files may be replaceable, but you might have to just reload your previous save.

If you are relying a lot on quicksaves, you may want to increase the number kept, if you have not done so already (this requires that the patch be installed, or that you have a version of the game already updated, such as the DVD release).

In the 'Divine Divinity' folder, open the 'config.lcl' file in a text editor (such as Notepad) and add the line "[color:"orange"]MaxQuickSaveAmount #[/color]", where '#' is the maximum number of quicksaves you want (max 99). If you add this at the end of the file, hit the Enter key before saving. The game expects the last line to be blank, so doesn't recognize the change if you just add it there and save.

Do you notice any difference in crash frequency between quicksaves and named saves?
I didn't have any problems with crashes, but made unique saves before entering new dungeon levels, before new buildings (if I had not otherwise saved in awhile), after getting or completing major quests, after tough fights or finding good equipment, etc, and used quicksaves while exploring or clearing monsters.

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before starting the game?

Troubleshooting Tips (& manual install procedure)

There are some system troubleshooting tips (virus, spyware, etc) in the Beyond Divinity topics below, though you would have to skip over the BD specific stuff.
yet another "Game simply won't start!"-thread and BattleFields N00b ?

it only ever happened during quick saves. I rarely used the named saves as i bound f5 as save (fps hang up). There seems to be no pattern to the crashes, as it has happened to me on three separate computers and in different locations (tho normally pretty near the start of the game), and i in general dont use virus checkers ect.

what annoys me is the fact i have now done the first part so many times its a chore slogging back up the levels, and for once in a game im reluctant to cheat.

the multiple quicksave thing should save me and i shall have a look over those threads to see if i can get any fixes, or even restore my crashed save. but as it norm crashes out 1/5 of the way through a save im not too hopeful.

ta much for the pointers tho, going to give it a blast when i get home from work

edit: i should say its the 3 cd version and i have not done any patching as i have no net on the comp i play it on

Check the version number in the bottom right corner of the main menu. Some re-release CD versions have already been updated to the latest (1.0034A). If you have the original English release (1.0029A) you may be able to download the 10MB patch on another computer and transfer it to the one the game is on by DVD/CD-RW, USB key or even floppies (using a file splitter such as JR Split File). Some computer and game stores may be able/willing to download patches, as well.

While getting the patch is a good idea if you have the original release, quicksave crashes were not a 'known issue' in the unpatched game, so it may or may not help with that. There are other benefits, though. For example, in a game started in the unpatched version, Finnigan's magic lockpicks are breakable and if you give them to him to complete the quest you loose the stat bonus they provide. In a game started in the latest version the lockpicks are unbreakable (no more need for stacks of normal lockpicks) and you can complete the quest and buy back the lockpicks. Also, Finnigan has a much better selection of inventory items for sale in games started in the updated version.
