Hello there.

I just purchased this game from Amazon.ca(and it is a new copy of the game, as it was still in the shrinkwrap) from a reputable seller. My problem is that whenever I try to play the game(I tried this with both the 1.0 and the 1.47 versions), my computer immediately reboots itself.

My specs are as follows:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2x2.0 Ghz(Dual Core)
1024 MB DDR RAM
Nvidia Geforce 7800 GT OC(PCI Express)
RealTek 97 sound card(it sucks, I know)
DVD/RW Drive(but no burning programs installed as far as I know)
Windows XP Professional(with SP2)

I have the current drivers for my motherboard and my video card which would be the two main culprits.

I also have Spysweeper and Norton Antivirus 2006 installed, but I disabled both of them as I read that Norton may be incompatible with Star Force.

I really would like to play this game(I also own Divine Divinity) as soon as possible. If anyone could help me with this problem(as I am sure that the five times that my computer rebooted itself is not too healthy for my computer's longevity), it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Does the copy protection window come up at all, saying it is checking the CD? If not the problem may be with that, and you could try reinstalling the drivers.
Updating or removing StarForce drivers

What happens if you try starting the game without the play CD in an optical drive?

In Windows Explorer, if you browse to the Beyond Divinity folder and double click on the div.exe program file, does that work any better than the shortcut?
In the '..\Beyond Divinity\Static' folder, can you view the 'intro.mpg' video? Don't watch the other videos, as they contain spoilers.

If you run the configuration program can you set the resolution, run the test and save?

If you set the game resolution and your desktop resolution the same, does that help? A couple people had problems with how DirectX switched resolutions, which this would help with.

If you run dxdiag (click Start | Run, type in dxdiag and hit Enter), does it report any problems? There are a couple of tests under the Display tab.

There are more troubleshooting suggestions in the following topics.

Thank you for the reply, Raze.

I ran the dxdiag like you suggested, and it said that everything was working fine. I have DirectX 9.0C(or something like that), will that have any bearing on it? Should I try an earlier version of DirectX or would that just fubar me even more?

I was able to run the Configuration just fine(I chose the option just to the right of 1024x768) and 4xAA(which I should be able to run with the video card I have).

I was not able to see anything with regards to the copy protection at all. Immediately after clicking either the shortcut or the game in the Program list, it reboots my computer.

I will have to wait until later tonight to check to see if I can run it from the div.exe program file or to see if I can see that Intro video, as I uninstalled the computer last night. I just got finished a 12 hour shift, so I will reinstall it when I get up. I will also check those two threads out.

Thanks again for the suggestions. It is awesome to see that people are still willing to help others even though the game is 3+ years old.

Man, I really want to play this game! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

I have the same problem but instead of instant reboot my laptop BSOD's with the IRQ_LESS.... The protection scan doesn't show up before the crash.

I encountered the problem a year ago on my desktop PC but I tried installing it again after the issue with the laptop and it worked this time around.

I have Nvidia Nforce 4 chipsets in both my laptop and desktop and suspect it may be inconsistencies with SF3 and nvidia IDE/SATA drivers. Originally I played the game with a Nforce2 based system but it didn't include nvidia SATA.

There is a similar problem, and some suggestions, in the topic Game crashes with nForce 1 chipset.

Did you try searching online using the full BSOD title and any file names listed?

I did some uninstalling of various drivers but nothing seem to help before trying a SF3 update from January 2007 which fixed the issue. I had tried updating the SF3 drivers previously (September release, I think) but that didn't work. Anyway thanks for the input.

If you have the English version of BD, the latest patch removes the Starforce copy protection, so that should also fix the problem. If you don't need the Starforce drivers for another game, you can run their removal program after installing the BD patch.
