Everyone seemed to have moved out the first village and are now at the Farmlands.
I just solved the George Murder Quest and am looking for Mardaneus.

Mardaneus should still be in his house in Aleroth. Try wandering around the house close to the walls; sometimes he just doesn't show up until you get close to him. Also, check the mini-map for green crosses.
