My magic locpicks disappeared once before when I went to steal a dagger. I avoided it by dropping them on the ground first. Now I noticed they're gone again after escaping Stormfist / Iona's (sp) dungeon. Is this a known bug? I can live without them, it's just irritating heh. I'm guessing it happened when I lost all my equipment. It must have happened quite a few saves ago because my oldest save doesn't have them (it's in the dungeon).

Heh nevermind, on a long shot I went and checked the table at the city watch again, and surprise, there they were! YAY!

I found out my accident that you can make them disappear if you use them to lockpick. sad I remember the anguish of looking everywhere for them, so I finally came to that conclusion and loaded game, this time making sure not to lockpick anything while I was carrying them. wink

I'm not sure if that's it or not. I know I lockpicked numerous things with them (sometimes having other lockpics in my inv and sometimes only having the magic ones) with no problem. And the one time where I know when they disappeared was at a time when I wasn't lockpicking anything (I did use a key to open a door, but that shouldn't count as lockpicking).

Unfortunately on this last time, I wasn't paying attention (frankly because I wasn't expecting them to disappear) so I have no idea when it happened. Though I can't rightly say that I remember picking them out of the chest (spoiler: when you recover your equipment after Stormfist)

I was contemplating whether I should just live without them or do something else. But since I found them again, I guess I'll keep them heh. I'll pretend the Magic Lockpick Fairy tried to return them to their rightful place, but I just recovered them again. Anyway I bought them fair and square smile

Sometimes if you steal the lockpicks first and then get the quest to do so they get put back in the desk/table. Perhaps stealing the dagger did something similar?
Did you first talk to Finnigan around when you entered the castle?

In the unpatched game, using the Lockpick skill with the magic lockpicks in your inventory will break them. Installing the patch after this will put them back in the city watch building, and they will no longer be breakable.
If dropped on the ground, they will disappear (which the patch will not fix). However, they can still be recovered;

Lost Items - guide and directory of inventory files - Ignore the first reference to Finnigan's magic lockpicks that directs you to a different topic; as of the 1.34 patch / 1.0034A game version, this is the best way to replace the lockpicks.

If the game is started after installing the patch, or in an already updated version of DD, then the lockpick is unbreakable and can safely be dropped on the ground. Also, you can return the lockpick to complete the quest, and then buy them back (in a game started in the unpatched version of DD, you can not buy them back, so IMNSHO it is better to keep them and leave the quest unsolved).

Yeah, that seems about right, because I can drop them and use them just fine, but at various points they just disappear, and reappear where they were originally found. So far they've disappeared when going for the dagger, and again at some point between starting Stormfist and escaping the following dungeon. Something maybe of interest, on my previous game, I picked up the lockpicks and the knife at the same time, no problem.

I know you guys know this, but there are other quest items you can buy back. might be spoilers: I bought back Penumbra's dagger (though it sucks, it's cool to look at). I bought back the Cyclops eye. I bought back my original Dragon Breastplate (it was expensive, but I liked it's stats much better than the repaired one, plus hey, two dragon breastplates! I think you can buy your true love's amulet back too, though there's no reason to. ...
