I remember vaguely that resistances cap at 100.You can get higher resistance ,but there isn't much point to it because 150 resistance does not offer more protection than 100.Can anyone confirm or correct this?

There is not a hard cap at 100 (it is not a percentage), but you are correct that once you get your resistances up in the 90-100 range any extra resistance is not going to have a significant effect.

Thanks for your reply,Raze.
Is there any information available on how this is calculated?

No, AFAIK there isn't. People have just noticed that elemental attacks are not causing them much of a problem after they get their resistances up near 100, or so. You never become immune to elemental damage, for practical purposes you don't have to worry much about it.

IIRC there use to be a brief description of combat mechanics on the DivineDivinity.com site, but it no longer exists and I don't think it went into any actual calculations, anyway. I got the formula there for the experience required to reach a certain level (for the post on the Wisdom skill), but I think the rest was more of a general overview.

I suppose you could always use iZakaroN's SaveEditor (or from Kiya's site, with description) to give yourself a large number of hitpoints, then remove your equipment, make a test save and let the same creature beat on you with different resistances. There will be some range of damage in any elemental attack, but changing resistances should effect the average damage of a number of hits. Poison damage (ie after a zombie hit) might be more consistent (so you would need less values to determine an accurate average), but with less damage done it might be harder to see an effect from resistance. I'm not sure if dropped poison flasks will damage your character, but Buad's tea will.

Interesting clarification.I noticed that with 110 fire resistance if I let an imp mage hit me with his stream of fireballs, that only about 1 out of 10 actually damage me.Also the amount of damage is low:just a couple of hit points.I can only see my health go down when there are a bunch of them.
Does resistance only affect the amount of damage or also the chance of being hit by an elemental attack?

Your chance to hit and be hit are determined by your character level and agility (see differences between classes - minor spoilers).

I don't think your resistances directly effect your chance of being hit. Perhaps if the damage is dropped to zero, though, the game just counts it as a miss? I suspect the regular imps would also have trouble hitting you consistently.

You could use the save editor to drop your agility, but would have to hex edit (Some more hex offsets...) to drop your resistances. Maybe I'll try that out if I have time later...

In a new game you could test out an elemental attack, then use the save editor to learn Magic Barrier, save, unlearn the skill, re-load, re-learn, etc to boost your resistances, and then try the same opponent again, to see if you get hit less or if each hit just does less damage.
