I was wondering whether anyone else here has played Arcanum. In my opinion it is one of the best RPGs ever made: excellent story, interesting world, intriguing character system, haunting music. If only the graphics were more edible. Shouldn't we try to convince the Larians to create a remake idea?

A generation [...] now stood under the open sky in a countryside in which nothing remained unchanged but the clouds, and beneath these clouds, in a field of force of destrutive torrents and explosions, was the tiny, fragile human body.(Walter Benjamin)

ok...first of all..hi to everyone!
So...I also played Arcanum and it's the best game I ever played(with Divine Game of course...)
It really is a unique game with great story and it just leaved soo big impresion on me that not even today's games can compare to it.
About the sequel/prequel,well it was announced and the game needed to be in 3d in source engine(I think..) , but then Trioka gone "to a better place" and the project was stopped.I've also been visiting some forum about Arcanum where every now and then people would come and say that they have a team and that they are working on some sort of sequel/prequel but that was just empty words...
I think that this game is unrighfully forgotten and it deserves better place in gaming industry.
Well a remake would be great thing but I don't think it will happen because gaming is in these days more oriented on quantity than quality (but there is always an exception. wink )

P.S. bad english...

Tried it once, but abandoned it later.

It sits fully installed on my HD, though ...

I plan to play it within the next months.

I have the demo, but I really dislike that there's no camera-follow mode, meaning I have to run five steps, push the screen over, run five more steps, move the screen again...this makes something as simple as walking through a forest looking for a house really tedious. I really want to like this game, but when basic movement is such a chore, there's not much chance of me getting into it.

Played it halfway, never finished it. It was a good game but the "big turning point"(in the later part of the storyline) kinda ruined things by quite a bit: they would've been better off throwing some other kinda plot twist instead. That plot twist ruined the magic and made it a little lame.

No, we don't need a remake.

We need an Arcanum sequel -- and it should be made by Obsidian, since most of the key ex-Troika guys went there.

I'd started it a gazillion times, but was never able to get all the way through it. Too much irked me about the game - the combat, the stat disadvantages to certain races and most female characters, missing out on certain gameplay as a female character. Even when I tried playing through as a male character a few times, I ended up losing interest somewhere in the midst of the game, so it wasn't just the being irked by stat/gender disadvantages that made me put this game aside.

Numerous times I'd heard that the game was a lot like Fallout and it was good because the same people who did Fallout did Arcanum, etc.

Well I *love* the Fallout games. Didn't see much resemblance at all and did not inspire my interest in Troika as a game development company.

I really wanted to like this game though because I liked the steampunk world and the magic vs. technology premise, but it just didn't happen for me.

Perhaps one day it will happen, but for now, I have too large of a game backlog (including Beyond Divinity) to try again any time soon.

Just so no one misses this gem: it's up on http://www.gog.com for like 6 euro. It's a bargain. It's a steal.

What you mentioned is indeed very annoying for me !

I hoped this game make a good match with what I like, but the general gameplay for me is NOT intuitive to learn !! I makes me so confused smirk
In the beginning DD was for me also not simple to learn (I learn NOT fast!), but the controls are clear and logic and the gameplay soooo addictive that I can't stop playing ! Still, today :hihi:

Much much better matched Beyond Divinity with me than Arcanum smile

I think I go play in the future on my pc only DD and BD and all other games on my Xbox.
(or there must come out a very great game with 2D (isometric view) like DD ... but I'm afraid nobody is waiting for such a game again ??? frown ... )

On 7th of february 2015 : I start a new adventure in the Divinity world of Original Sin,
it's a Fantastic Freaking Fabulous Funny ... it's my All Time Favorite One !

There's a very big difference in Arcanum if you play combat real-time vs turn-based. In real-time, you can kite enemies which makes combat easy. This is not possible in turn-based.

Also, magic & melee are much more powerful compared to technology.
