Does anyone know of a way to clear the black fog from the maps, so you can see where you're going? I assume it's some sort of command line parameter, but I can't say for ssure.

I found the fog handy for keeping track of where I had explored, and later in the game started rejecting equipment with sight bonuses, so that my sight range would not get too much larger than what was shown on the screen.

To clear as much fog-of-war as possible, try a combination of;
  • Max Elven Sight (much more effective) and Ranger Sight (if you have the skill points to spare and really want to maximize your sight range).
  • Keep any equipment you find with sight bonuses, to use when exploring.
  • Toss a teleporter stone onto/into inaccessible regions and move around by repeatedly tossing one stone and teleporting to it (you are not suppose to be up on most mountains, across the river in the south east corner of the dark forest, etc, and will not be able to walk there).
  • Cast Wizard's Sight twice in the same location (cast it a second time before the fog-of-war fills in again from the first, and it will remain clear). Hold the shift key down to move the screen focus away from your character and towards the area you want to clear.

Testing weapon ranges in the wastelands (final area of the game), I used DAD's item editor to add a +1000 sight bonus to a ring; equipping it cleared most of the fog of war in that area. I tried to equip a second ring with the same bonus, but the game crashed. I'd expect something like +1500 should be sufficient to clear the fog in Rivertown and the Dark Forest, but do not know how far you can push the limit. Certainly save before equipping any edited rings (etc) in new areas.

Your character's sight range can also be directly changed. See Some more hex offsets... (and perhaps Teleporting Anywhere, via hex editor as a reference).

Thanks for the reply, I was wondering if there was a command-line entry, so I would end up with clear maps. The main problem is lack of some of the gear you mention, and as you will agree, a lot of detail is hidden in those areas still covered by that black fog. I did look in the config file, but there's not much there.
