Now it's getting really serious, I want to do several things, all of which I have been able to do in other RPG's via command line entries - basically they are just add-ons to the start up command. Either that or an entry into the config file.
* Elimination of Fog of War * Removal of the Intro sequence
If someone would be kind enough to help out here, I would be very grateful

There is a configuration file edit to skip the intro videos (see here). With the latest game version, this will also eliminate the need for the Play CD, except for a couple cases (the blessing ceremony, after hitting the gong late in the game, and at the end of the game). These are the same limitations as with the no-CD hack. The version number is shown in the bottom right corner of the main menu (latest is 1.0034A, otherwise you may need the patch). The DVD version has already been updated, CD versions may or may not be, depending on when they were produced.

Right, I've now re-installed the game, there still is no config.div text file, but there is a file called "divineevent.dat". This is notepad format and contains the following entries:
"Drop Console" "Toggle KeyPlate" "Icon Hotkey Assign" "Toggle OptionsPlate" "Toggle NonEnergy Plate Visibility" "Toggle Plate Visibility" "Toggle Show Icon Hotkey" "Open Load Plate" "Open Save Plate" "Open Status Plate" "Open Inventory" "StartEditor" "SwitchEditor" "PauseGame" "NextHour" "AutoMap" "ClearShroud" "ScaleAutoMapUp" "ScaleAutoMapDown" "SwitchCombatMode"
I woder, is this the file you are referring to, and is the config,div file from the US version of the game?

Check the '..\Divine Divinity\Run' folder for any files named 'config'. Starting with XP, MS' default option in Explorer is to hide file extensions for known file types (you can change this in the Options). There should be two such files in the run folder, config.div and config.lcl (if the extensions are hidden, the file type should differentiate them, if the folder view is set to details). The divinityevent.dat file is not what you need to edit. The config.div file should look similar to below (some entries may be missing, depending on your options, but the first 2 for the game resolution will be there, and in that format). // display width width 1024
// display height height 768
// activate smooth mode smooth 1
// global contrast contrast 1.000000
// global gamma gamma 1.000000
// show the intro movies startup logo 0
// enable quickstart quickstart "on"
// use compressed image lists images compressed
// use flat file system flat files
// enable/disable z-tunneling ztunnel 1
// set the memory limit memory limit 32
// enable/disable the use of bitmapped fonts use8bitfont 1
// disables fog rendering no fog

I've just checked the file system again - and ensured that I had "show Hidden Files and Folders" checked, no result. That file just does not seem to exist, I've looked in the Run folder, and all of it's sub-folders as well just in case, no joy. Is it possible that this version did not have that file or files included - or that the latest patch has deleted it from the system - or could it be that it is on the game disk?

Should have thought of this before, but if you have Windows Vista and installed the game to the default Program Files folder path, and depending on how you have your user accounts set up, Vista can create the savegames folder under the user data folder, and map that folder to where the game expects it to be when the game is started. Perhaps it did the same with the config.div file? Check for the file in the location;
C:\Users\{account name}\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Divine Divinity\Run\config.div

Still no luck. I'm running Microsoft Windows XP Pro x64, with a dual core Athlon AMD processor 2.2GHz and 2Gb RAM; the graphics is a Sapphire ATI Radeon updated to the latest catalyst drivers and with 256Mb Video RAM. The soundcard is a Creative Labs Soundblaster Audugy 2 ZS fully updated.
I have checked the Documents and Settings folder on C drive - However, it may help in that I use D:\Games to store ALL my games on, with D:\Program Files for normal programmes such as anti-virus, label creation programmes and the like.
There is no Users folder on ANY drive, the nearest is Documents and Settings, this has the various Accounts, and on my account name folder there is a sub folder named Application Data. However, in there is a folder called Games, though there are no files evident - and I have checked that the system is set to view all files and folders! There is certainly nothing in Application Data regarding Divine divinity.
I have checked the root folders; the My documents folder DOES have a folder called My Games, though Divine divinity is not one of them, likewise with Shared documents, there is no entry and the other Ian's documents seems to be more or less a copy of My documents.

Over the last few weeks I've been trying to find that config.div file; as I said, the only config file you mention is config.lcl and the enties in it are as follows: CONFIG.LCL
width 800 height 600 game rate 40 fps music 1 smooth 1 ztunnel 1 memory limit 32 use8bitfont 1 quickstart "on" images compressed flat files language 1 However, I was looking at one of your earlier messages, in which you say: Should have thought of this before, but if you have Windows Vista and installed the game to the default Program Files folder path, and depending on how you have your user accounts set up, Vista can create the savegames folder under the user data folder, and map that folder to where the game expects it to be when the game is started. Perhaps it did the same with the config.div file? Check for the file in the location;
C:\Users\{account name}\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Divine Divinity\Run\config.div In short, as I have said, it does not appear to exeist. HOWEVER that being said, there IS a file, config.div, but this is just the application for the Divine Divinty v1.1 video configuration utility and is NOT a text file! Do you think it may be an idea to modify the config.lcl file instead or should I leave it alone?

Editing the config.lcl file shouldn't hurt. That may not work and it could cause a problem, but it is easy enough to reverse the changes in that case. Try running the configuration program, hit the reset button, change the resolution and save (you can skip the test). This should re-create the config.div file. If not, the default versions of config.div, slashed.cfg and slashed-d3d6.cfg can be downloaded here (1KB). The configuration program file should be named configtool.exe (and is 184KB). The config.div file should be shown as 1KB (if so, try opening it in a text editor). If your config.div file is shown as 184KB (or basically anything higher than 1KB), then I would try running a ScanDisk (right click on the hard drive in Windows Explorer, select Properties, switch to the Tools tab, and hit the Check Now button in the Error Checking Status section). If no errors are found, you could backup your saves (just in case) and re-install the game.

Thanks for your patience - the config.div file was showing up as a DivX file (I have that programme on my computer). I've altered it to open with Notepad, so that's OK now. Whilst we've been corresponding, I've been looking ant the config.lcl file, my machine supports ALL that's in there, and it's the same as the config.div file entries, so what I'll do if you agree is to put ALL of those entries into the config div file (I'll back up the original just in case). The will come the moment of truth, as I'm sure you'll agree, it's not going to be a 5 minute job. I've been using computers for over 15 years at home, and a lot longer than that at work, and if I've learnt anything in all that time it's this - take your time - it's far better to be sure than sorry. Once I've done the modification, I'll put the file (I have 3 temp folders, one on each of the 3 drives and I'll do the work in one of those). Once it's finished and I've checked to make sure there are no nasty surprises apparent, I'll then transfer it to the main file set of Divine Divinity. Thanks for the cfg.zip file, at least that gave me an idea where to look! Anyway, I'll get back to you, probable tomorrow or the next day and let you know how things went - though I have noticed in the config.lcl file the lines are set as: Config.lcl width 800 height 600 game rate 40 fps music 1 smooth 1 ztunnel 1 memory limit 32 use8bitfont 1 quickstart "on" images compressed flat files language 1 As I use 1024 x 768 resolution, the first 2 lines there also need altering. Anyway, as I said, I'll let you know how I get on. As I intend to alter both files, I'll back up the present ones until I'm sure the system works - it may well be a good idea to back up the saves as well just to be on the safe side. Honestly, I must admit, it's not often I get stumped with a problem like this, but then I do know that a lot of people like yourself will give advice to others if asked. After all is that not what forums are for - to talk and ask questions?

It doesn't matter if *.div files are associated with DivX; the game doesn't use Windows' file associations, and you can still open the config.div file in notepad to edit (just not by double clicking).
You can try adding config.lcl entries in the config.div file, but the game may not recognize them there (each file has an expected format).
I've changed my game resolution in the config.div file, but never needed to do anything with the settings in the config.lcl file.

Again, many thanks for your help, I've managed to get the details sorted and the new config.div file in place. As I said, I'm keeping all my saves, and the old config.div file in another folder on a different drive, so then at least I'll be able to go back and restore the originals if necessary. As you mentioned, I haven't modified the config.lcl file, and (touch wood) all appears to be well.
Many thanks again for all your help - and I know that you must have been more than a bit irritated when what you said seemed to be a bit weird to me, however, all that's in the past now. As you may well have guessed, I do NOT like tampering with the carious files on any programme - it can lead to all sorts of unwanted problems as you know; however I will do it if it just involves a config file, and I've a pretty good idea of what has to be changed, though as I've told you, I'll always keep a backup so that if there's any untoward problem, it can easily be restored.

As promised,I DID get the config.div file edited, and I am letting you know how things went. Whilst it was done a few days ago, I soon realised that only an hour or so of play would not show up any problems, so I've left getting back to you for a few sessions to make sure that things seem to working OK. I have edited the config,div file to read as the following: config.div
// display width width 1024
// display height height 768
// activate smooth mode smooth 1
// global contrast contrast 1.000000
// global gamma gamma 1.000000
// show the intro movies startup logo 0
// enable quickstart quickstart "on"
// use compressed image lists images compressed
// use flat file system flat files
// enable/disable z-tunneling ztunnel 1
// set the memory limit memory limit 32
// enable/disable the use of bitmapped fonts use8bitfont 1
// disables fog rendering no fog
You will note that I have taken all the values from one of your posts, after verifying them with my config.lcl file, the time taken since has been to try to ensure that no untoward problems are in evidence. Once again, thanks very much for your patent and understanding help, and please I would like to tell you this has been greatly appreciated.

I've changed my game resolution in the config.div file, but never needed to do anything with the settings in the config.lcl file.
Speaking of resolution, can we change it to run 1680 x 1050? I haven't loaded the game in a while, but was wondering if I could run native res on my new pc. Thanks
Is reality just a fantasy?

I have not tested any widescreen resolutions, but it can not hurt to try. If the game crashes, you can try a lower resolution (you'll likely crash opening the automap that much higher than the supported resolutions, even if the game itself is ok).
With Beyond Divinity, the maximum supported resolution was 1280x960 (IIRC). For me, the text in books (etc) was starting to get a little small at that resolution, so I played at 1152x864.
