Even if the reasons for it are good; losing co-op multiplayer from a game can only ever be a bad thing.

Game mod communities can do fantastic things and really extend the life of games. I'm sure everyone knows of what Counter-strike did for half-life, or what DOTA did for Warcraft3...

There is a mod for Bethesdas Oblivion done by a single student which introduces primitive multiplayer into the game and while much is broken like grouped questing, etc, it still shows what can be done with very little ground work available for the community to utilize.

So, multiplayer would be great but Larian needs to spend time fine polishing other areas? Then why not let the community do it and give them as much of a head start as possible via tool kits and sdks and whatever multiplayer code was done? Don't underestimate the work they will put in or how much faster they'll get things done! At the very least don't try and restrict community content!

Many people were let down when multiplayer coop was canceled but with larians support im sure modders will have it done before we finish singleplayer.

An official multiplayer mode is at least a possibility. Posted awhile ago near the end of the News from the front topic:

I guess it'll really depend on how much demand there is for such a toolkit. I think it might be more sensible to link a mod toolkit with a multiplayer mode, than just release it for single player.

Some previous discussion: I'd love to see a coop-mp.

I belive that the multiplayer part is essential in a game, I'm sure Larian won't forget that, and get this part done in time. biggrin

They already said that multiplayer was dropped a while ago, so because of that I'm sure that it won't be part of the game wink

I'm quite surprised that no matter how obscure a game is - but if it is something in 3D like a shooter - then a few people will most surely pop up from nowhere and assk for multiplayer support, how much important, or better: essenrtial that is, that this enhances the community and the lifetime of a game ...

I'm quite surprised, though, that none of them ever asks for MP support for Tetris ...

From a developer- or publisher-POV adding a multiplayer component or at least a powerful modding device is the sensible thing to do. Because it can turn an otherwise reasonably successful game into a huge hit, establish a large fan community, and so on. Of course, if the game is a failure by itself, multiplayer or modding tools likely won't change anything... wink

Personally, I'm perfectly content with playing a good solo player campaign. Yeah, I know, I'm a minority. wink Only very seldom I find myself tempted by mods or multiplayer. Or even developer-made add-ons; only when they really add to the original game, story-wise that is. Shivering Isles for TES4: Oblivion was one of that rare occasions for me.

Does anyone of you know the RPG "Siege Of Avalon" ?

There is still an active German-language modding community for that !

RAZE> thx for the link and quote. i'll have a look at that now. Fingers crossed, ay? smile

shocker> Indeed! An example for divine divinity was I played it single player in the same room as my friend and we spoke about where we were up to and stuff like the location of the dragon gloves (elven funeral pyres!) but we'd have had far better a game if we could have been in the SAME session. It was almost painful.

Then beyond divinity you had two characters - surely the perfect chance to include an option to have a friend control one? *sigh*

3rd time lucky? please?!

AlrikFassbauer> Well, actually, when i first played Tetris on my Gameboy in 1991 (i think) you could connect up two gameboys via the included cable for multiplayer games. Yes, tetris shipped with multiplayer. xD

Myrthos> Aye, im aware of this. I'm just showing a little fan support for the idea. The more people who do the better!! (also, i've seen you around RPGwatch. great site! Gets at least a visit a day)

MarkusG> content to play? I'd go as far as to say im damn keen to play single player!! But what about single player with a friend? In the end if theres no multiplayer the game will be finished and forgotten while we play multiplayer Diablo3. A co-op mode would be at least a second play though and would be fresh too. "follow me, i know where theres a secret sword in a stone! take it and they kill the elves, though..."
