Hello everyone,

I have read many of the issues about ctd's happening specifically around startup and have a few bits of more information aswell as another depth to the issue.

I used to have the same issue of ctd's happening every time i started the game.

I updated my videocard, sound and chipset drivers, to no avail.

then i had an ideah, to use a little tool that came with my dual screen program, called UltraMon. With that, i could manage my dual screens better, but thats beside the point. the point is, i have been able to use this to force the resolution to start the game with. and to my surprise, the game only started up when i forced it to work on 1024x768 Then and ONLY then i was able to disable the option to use the desktop resolution upon startup of the game. so i did not have to use the workaround. However it looks reeeaally dodgy on a widescreen that way.

Then i tried to slowly put things back up, since at the resolution of 1024x768 with medium settings is kindof insulting to my pc, which can run other games at 1680x1050 with high graphics, and i mean games like UT3 and Crysis. but enough comparisson.

i found that when trying to put the resolution up to 1680x1050, it would set it to 1440x900 (which somehow appears below 1680x1050 on the list) automatically. But it would atleast still reach the menu. but when putting the rest of the graphics any higher than medium, it crashes and i am forced to use the workaroundn again to get into the menu to begin with.

now lets be honest, working like that is tiring. I wonder if this information may be of use to find an answer to the startup issues some others may have, though them being unable to use the workaround. And i would also like to be able to put everything to maximum so i can play the game as was intended.

My system specs are:
Motherboard ASUS P5K
Pentium D CPU 2.80GHZ (this IS two cores btw, since with other games with minimum requirement of Duo Core, it works on my pc just fine. And when i open the performance tab of taskmanager, it shows me two cores.)
3GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS 320

Windows XP Home edition Service pack 3

please ask if any other specs are required and how i can best obtain them.

A lot of people are having this problem with 8000 series cards. I had the same issue and my card is an 8800GTX and I'm using Win7 32bit. The only way to fix it for me was to turn off shadows and instead check the two options next to shadows on. It doesn't look as nice but its the only way to play the game. Too bad they won't fix this.

I am not sure if you are crashing for the same reasons as me, doesn't even sound like you are getting to the game.

Hmm, i'll give that a try then, thanks, but i get a feeling im experiencing all sorts of issues. after having played the game at extremely low resolution [shadows work and look fine sofar, i love when models cast shadows on themselves] and i stumbled across the infinite load bug when having finished in the tutorial area and trying to return to the airship.

its like half of the issues on this forum are collectively going on on my pc...

thanks for the shadows hint though, i'm going to try it out right now

another thing i desperately want resolved aswell is to play on 1680x1050 cause thats what my comp can handle, and thats what i have a 22" widescreen for. it doesnt make sence that the game automatically pushes that down to 1440x900
