Hey guys, I'm considering to download the game from http://game.gamesplanet.com because
1. it's the fastest means to get it and
2. it's the cheapest way to buy it.

But I have a couple questions before I do that. I often heard of problems with digital downloads via Steam and especially with patches. Some games had pretty bad issues. So, since you play digital downloads without a disc, the exe is clearly a different one than the retail version. Does this mean that the official patches cannot be applied and one has to hope for the best that the seller will provide the modified patch? That would be quite unsettling, because I've tried the game and I've seen that a patch is VERY neccessary. So I'd really like to be able to use the upcomming patch that is supposed to bring all game versions to the same status.

Plus, there's no manual (yet..?) and the game is not quite self explanatory enough. And yes, I noticed that someone here tried to find a manual, but wasn't successful. Google isn't helpful, either. And since it is not on the cd, which is odd, I very much doubt that it's included in the download file. So it would be nice if they provided it here.

And lastly, are savegames between different versions compatible?

Yes, Larian would have to give the updates to digital distributors for them to package into a patch specific to their distribution of the game. Presumably they are working with all the distributors for the upcoming patch, so one from Gamesplanet shouldn't be delayed much, if at all, from the official release. Any additional patches in the short to mid term should be fine, as well. You could email Gamesplanet to see if they have a policy on patching support, or do things game by game (ie patch as long as the game is still selling).

Eventually certain distributors may stop making updates, but I don't know if digital distributors are any more or less likely to do so than traditional distributors. For example, the last official Australian patch for Beyond Divinity was 1.45, but the UK / North American versions got two patches after that (the last just to remove the copy protection). A registry edit will allow the 1.49 English patch to be installed on the Australian game version, though. I think the length of support from publishers for other language localizations varied. The digital distribution for Beyond Divinity started off with all the updates included, so didn't need any patches.

There should be a manual for the digital download version. Maybe nobody with that version saw the request for an upload, or they couldn't be bothered? It is possible the manual gets watermarked with your name or account number, or something, before you download it...

I don't know if anyone has tried moving saves between different versions, or if the upcoming patch would improve compatibility (since the games would be brought to the same version number).

Thank you for your elaborate answer to my questions and your welcome. smile
So I understand the patch issue isn't as bad as I imagined.

The issue of the manual, however persists. I guess I didn't explain too well before; here's a screen of the status on the manual and game version on the site:

Soon isn't very specific. But to me it implies that there's no manual included in the download. Maybe I'm wrong...

Sounds good. I take it that the old saves will always be compatible with new patches in this game? You might think it's a dumb question, but I've seen quite a number of games where you had to start over after patching.

I dunno, there are a number of things that are annoying or hindering or unnecessary time wasters (what's with the windows-esque ask-thrice-before-doing-the-player's-bidding-policy?), but yet it strangely and strongly compells me to keep playing. Must be magic, I guess. And that coming from someone who's still in love with DA:O. laugh

So here's hoping for the new patch to arrive soon, because the stumbling over wrong collisions of objects is very bad. And maybe a ini file to mess with the controls? I need the use of my middle mouse button, but the game won't let me...

I thought I saw the manual listed for download somewhere after purchase... I must have confused that with another game. Gamersgate's listing for D2:ED also says there is no manual yet.

The German version of the game was out a fair while before the English version, so if there were any bugs serious enough to prevent the game from maintaining backward compatibility with the saved game version, that would most likely have happened before now. I played the same game in Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity from initial (English) release right through to the final patch for both.

Since for some reason the gamesplanet site doesn't want to cooperate with me, I searched for other options for download and stumbled upon a nasty bit of information.

Is it true that this game has SecuRom, both the retail and digital version?

Yes, I believe so, though it is a mild form. There is just a disk check for the DVD version, with no activation or install limits. The copy protection for the digital versions would depend on the distributors (there have not been any complaints of unreasonable restrictions in the forum).

Is there a mild form of the plague? wink
Some things are to be avoided at all costs on principle alone. Like SuckaRom. I hate it when they spent heaps of money on "copyprotection" and release an unfinished game because the money ran out... frown

Is there anything in particular wrong with Securom.... other than being developed by Sony?
The only problems I've heard of have been with online activation, limited activations or requiring repeated activations (which the publishers back down from). Stupid, anti-consumer options are certainly not a surprise coming from Sony, but if the copy protection can be configured to avoid most of that, I don't have a big problem with it (at least when the alternative is pretty much giving up on PC gaming).

It would be nice if publishers didn't focus on anti-piracy measures to the point of causing problems for some or all of their customers. Avoiding any implementation of a copy protection system is a little tough, though, when it seems publishers all get together to adopt whatever the latest and greatest system is (which turns out to be more evil than the last one).
