I'd say male and below 30 something? That's a pretty wide range for a stereotype.

Are you by any chance a teacher in real life? Because you're sure starting sound like one. Your point is either that there is no such thing as "the stereotypical gamer" or that I applied the word "stereotype" incorrectly. Either way, you're probably right about both so I'll rephrase by saying this: most people are not inclined to assume that a 48 year-old woman plays video games in her spare time. There. Nothing wrong with that sentence, I hope.

Hi Tali, nice to know I'm the youngest in this circle (this thread), for a change. I'm 37, female and an avid gamer, though I don't at all care for consoles, because pc players are sold out because of them, but that's another story. I also often notice with great sadness, that a lot of game companies just seem to not acknowledge there are female players at all, regardless of age. And when you see such a male-only-rpg like i.e. Risen and read the credits, you see there aren't even any women on the dev team. Which explains a lot, lol. DD2 is nice enough in that respect, but it could do with a couple more girls on the team *g*. You can see that they clearly appeal more to the boys. Like the female animations are very cute, but if you tried to run like that, you'd likely need a new hip in no time, lol. As I said, totally cute (I do apprechiate a nice butt in front of me), but alas, they didn't think to give as much consideration to the male animations. The guys are awkward and not so much fun to play with. They could be hunkier, right? The gender switching option is still fun and a very good idea! Am I getting off track here? Sorry. But whaddaya say, we'll show 'em girl power in gaming.

Exclusives FTW. I think you'll find alot of companies acknowledge girl gamers more than you think. Quite alot of games nowadays are incorporating female gender characters for the gamer to play as, even in shooters where it's sometimes a little less feasible (and that's not to say women are not capable).

Oh, that's okay, still far from the average teen boy. I think you'll find alot of companies acknowledge girl gamers more than you think. Quite alot of games nowadays are incorporating female gender characters for the gamer to play as... Well, I guess what I mean is that often the female characters seem to be mainly designed as eye candy for the guys. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for eye candy and I enjoy the female form a lot, but I can empathise all too well with the males and that's where I'm sort of in conflict with myself. Like enjoying it from a male perspective while feeling objectified from a female point of view... ugh, I hope that makes any sense at all. ...even in shooters where it's sometimes a little less feasible (and that's not to say women are not capable). Surely not not capable, but not exactly the main target audience of the genre. I personally violently dislike firearms, so "no thanks" to shooters. And FP? I my first person I actually see my whole body, not just a disconnected, distorted hand and if I had to walk around without seeing myself, I would just get nauseous and fall down, so I fail to see the fun in that. But I know that I'm a minority in that and it's my problem that I can't play any games that are otherwise promising but unplayable for me. Weird, if you think about it: I know there are quite a few people who get virtual motion sickness and others just prefer the old pc style, so companies cheat themselves out of a lot of customers by not giving a choice, though it's totally doable. Still, girls nowadays do play other games than The Sims. RPG's are equally interesting for both genders, if the devs take it into consideration. And if the story is compelling enough to get sucked into, like The Witcher, where you don't play a generic male hero, but this unique anti-hero character. And there's strong women, too. And it has a considerable female fanbase. I hope we're hot hijacking this thread, but that the conversation is welcome.

So what sort of female lead would appeal to you? Hm, there are some out there... loved Longest Journey, so April Ryan and Zoe Castillo are nice, though Zoe is a bit naive, but still adorable. Dragon Age is mature in that regard; male or female hero are equal - but recognized as such, which lacks in DD2 (my girls have been referred to as males a couple of times). Oblivion also treats both genders alike. It's another thing, what modders focus on. But I think it's not about the female lead alone, it's about how the game itself treats the characters. How the player is directed to perceive them. With the main audience of adolescent males, there's also some educational aspect. For example, Gothic 3 forgot about women altogether; Risen has some women. A couple of whores and some housewifes who cook and sweep the streets. And yes, a pirate wench. And the guys who are playing the game, don't even notice there's somethin off. And have unconciously shaped their world view. Yeah I know, I think too much. But stuff like that worries me, because it explaines too well the behaviour of a lot of young people. As I experience it. Have you played Mirrors Edge? Tried to. Couldn't. Because of the missing body issue. Are they too cheap to create a toon and do the animations for it? So would you like to see a strong female anti-hero? Now I didn't say that. I just said that I liked Geralt a lot. But it could be interesting. Not a de-sexified piece if rock, though. Sexy is okay, but admirable for her strength of will would be required, too. Also what games do you play on the PC? I think I mentioned a few already. And I guess you don't want to hear about the early days of Tetris and Civ, haha. The jump into the 3d world was Indy and then Tomb Raider. Big TR fan for the longest time (before Crystal Dynamics). All kinds of adventures. Used to like click & point with nifty riddles, but nowadays I'm more into nice graphics. PoP is cool, love the acrobatics and the prince is hunky and goofy enough to be a good male character, heh. And yes, I've played Sims. My version was modded to mature rating, though. So how about a little quid pro quo? What do you play or what games would you recommend? What's your view on the more philosophical issues? Am I being too earnest for something that's supposed to be just fun or is there some disconcerting grain of truth in my musings?

Tried to. Couldn't. Because of the missing body issue. Are they too cheap to create a toon and do the animations for it? She doesn't have a body on the PC? I could have sworn you can see Faiths feet etc. Not sure how you're going to make a full body experience work properly in that respect if you want to see breasts (clothed of course) etc. I suppose it's not a massive deal but is probably unnesseccary coding. Now I didn't say that. I just said that I liked Geralt a lot. But it could be interesting. Not a de-sexified piece if rock, though. Sexy is okay, but admirable for her strength of will would be required, too. Well it was more a question rather than an implication. So would you go for the Blade type heroine? He's kind of anti hero. Or something like that guy from The Darkness? Someone who is basically a criminal or who has to do bad things to survive, etc. I think I mentioned a few already. And I guess you don't want to hear about the early days of Tetris and Civ, haha. The jump into the 3d world was Indy and then Tomb Raider. Big TR fan for the longest time (before Crystal Dynamics). Nothing wrong with Tetris (I was brought up on a Tandy TRS80 so older games are nostalgic) though I can't say I played Civilisation (not into population sims to be honest). Love Tomb Raider though, the new one, Underworld, is pretty good and is much more like the older games. So how about a little quid pro quo? Lol. What do you play or what games would you recommend? I play pretty much anything. I'm very diverse in my selection of games. I love a good RPG though as I used to play alot of p&p D&D when I was a kid. Currently I'm playing: Guild Wars Divinity 2 Halo ODST Avatar FIFA10 Golden Axe: Beastrider Streetfighter 4 Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 I will be buying Mass Effect 2 when that's released. Bayonetta, and Dantes Inferno, look good too. What's your view on the more philosophical issues? Am I being too earnest for something that's supposed to be just fun or is there some disconcerting grain of truth in my musings? I think that we all have our own tastes and needs to be catered for. It's hard to find a good developer who can cater for everyone. Sometimes it's best to not allow some things to put you off or you could miss out on some really good games.

Wow thanks for the welcome & wonderful conversations. I'm actually on my itouch so it's a finger by finger tapping away to write, will have to get on the computer later. I'm one of the people that gets motion sickness & literally am sick - started way back with computer game wolfenstien 3d if memory serves me (& it often fails now adays LOL). I agree that most games cater to young bucks even in this game did you notice you could customize the female more than the male? I usually play as a guy since it used to be that guy stats are stronger than the female characters. Females are definitly dressed more provactively than the male characters & it is a unique feeling to kinda want the males dressed more like that too but at the same time feeling objectified as earlier mentioned. ROFL Maybe the females could be less busty & clad a tiny bit more than they usually are whilst making the men more eye candied for us old pervert woman hahaha Games I like: Well loved mass affect & already prepaid for #2(Christmas present from my dad). Loved oblivion, Fallout 3 Tales series Persona 3 & 4 I unfortunately miss out on a lot of games cos of the motion sickness & with me it's not just 1st person shooters that get to me I couldn't even play dragon origins even though you could see the whole body there wasn't enough of a horizon/landscape view so when moving around I still got motion sickness. Even with the games I do play eg fallout & mass affect I can't stay in the shooter mode for too long but am grateful that I have the option to switch between the two views but I have to make sure I've eaten and that I take breaks otherwise I still can get sick even this game has given me little twinges of nausea. But am loving it so far though having trouble finding the mine LOL. Anyway as you see I tend to ramble (I'm claiming it as a normal part of old age ROFL) Thanks so much for the welcome!!! Tali
