I just got the English version from Steam (1.03) and I'm running into some severe freezing problems.

If I make it past character creation (sometimes it will freeze at the creation screen), it will randomly freeze within minutes of play. I can still hear sound effects (i.e. my character swinging his fists and/or moving around).

I have a 8800 GTS and an Athlon X2 4400+ with 4 GB RAM, running XP SP3. All drivers are updated.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Turn off HDR
Turn off shadows
Turn off AA

This game is a real system hog, and with your rig, it will grind along. I have a system 10x that and still see slight stutters here and there.

Good luck

I've already tried lowering and turning off graphic/resolution options - it did not change anything.

YES!

I have this EXACT same problem. I posted about this ages ago and never saw anyone with the same problems!

Originally i would get the freezing in the first main area (after the tut) and was never able to fix it. Since a minor hardware change i tried again and got all the way to sentinel island.

Now, if i play from cold (just turned the PC On) i will get about 20 minutes of play before the freeze happens. Once a freeze has occurred it will always happen within seconds of play until the PC is rebooted.

I noticed about the sound effects; if you crash and your just in the world then you will hear the sounds you expect to hear BUT if your in a menu of any kind and you freeze you will still ONLY HEAR WORLD SOUNDS. Like it kicks you out of the menu then freezes, idk. You shouldnt be able to hear your character swinging a weapon when the freeze happened on the map or something!!

I am hastily trying the new patch but i dont expect positive results. I paid good money for this game and it is totally 100 percent unplayable. Im so glad you guys have reported the same issue, i honestly thought my PC was broken and i PAID MONEY FOR NEW PARTS to get this game working.

I have tried running the game at various different graphical settings, it makes no difference (aside from the stuttering on MAX but im happy to play medium settings really)

SPECS:

2.8GHZ Athlon x2
2GB Kingston HyperX RAM
9800GT
550W PSU

EDIT: Oh lovely, the auto updater CRASHED now. Seriously larian, what the hell?

Of course they won't respond; you hijacked another persons thread!

Also, it's clear that you have issues with your system, not the game.
If an auto updater crashes while downloading or installing a file, and no one else has issues with it, then it is obviously your PC that has issues. Sounds like a bad stick of RAM or maybe heat! Could be a virus or 2.

This game is 100% playable.

If you post a DXdiag in a new thread, maybe we can get you started in the right direction.............

I reinstalled the AMD dual core optimizer and processor drivers for my Athlon processor and it seemed to have fixed my issue. In particular, I reinstalled these 2 files:

7/31/2008 AMD Dual-Core Optimizer Version 1.1.4
8/31/2007 AMD Processor Driver Version 1.3.2.0053 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (x86 and x64)

They were already installed on my machine so I don't know why reinstalling these would correct my issue, but eh, whatever wink

The only game issue I've run into so far is Quickload loading Quicksave character data except with another savegame's character location (although if I manually load the Quickload save file it is fine).

That the only bug I encountered so far with 1.03, quickload thing. It can be solved like mentioned above, or press the manual load hotkey, press esc to close it and use the quickload hotkey again, then it will load properly again if you only to quickload numerous of times, eg. at the merchants.

Another thing is need to resummon the necromantic creature every time morph out of dragon form. In older version 1.0, the creature will always stays, but not in the 1.03 anymore. I not sure its a bug or its meant to be so though.

I have found a tweak to the ntfs file sytem that happened to fix my stuttering issue.. was so bad I could barely play (core 2 duo e7200 OC'd 4.03 8GB of ram 8800 GT 512MB)

This fixed it for me Type in the following command to increase the cache setting:

fsutil behavior set memoryusage 2

To check the current value, type in this command:

fsutil behavior query memoryusage

To change the setting back to the default, use this command:

fsutil behavior set memoryusage 1
Top

command prompt is in the all programs/accessories menu ( sorry for the long delay for me to get back to you...) mine was set at 0 as well and after changing to 2, stuttering problem is gone I can play on extreme settings @ 1680x1050... after checking default, if it is set at 0, then go back and change to 2.. and I am 90% sure your problem goes away.. what is being altered is the file system cache buffer. make sure to right click it and choose run as administrator otherwise you cannot change system settings I hope this helps.. let me know if it works for you
