when playing the game the screen goes to black but not in the same place, sometimes i can play for an hour and the sometimes for 5 minutes and then screen goes black with a bit of audio underneath, i have to restart the computer to get back to playing again. i have the early uk version as the patch does not recognise the version.

The patch should work on the UK DVD version. Did you download the patch yourself, or go through the auto-update?

Have you tried playing at a lower resolution? A few people have gotten black screens playing in higher resolutions (dependent on hardware/drivers/etc), though in those case it was consistent.
