Well lastyear sometime i got this game after playing the demo and at that time i had a few problems with the game crashing for no reason, but at the time i thought it had to do with the system i was on at the time. As it was i still got fairly far in the game but never did finish it.

Now 2 weeks ago i put together a new PC that i knew should not have a problem with this game and lastnight figured i would come back and start over again to see if i could finish.

Once i got it loaded i came by to pick up the latest patch and i was happy to see that a new one just came out so i have v1.34 installed and started on quest.

About 10 mins into the game i crashed to desk top for no reason one min i was in the game next i am not. I had started that game in Direct Draw 1024x768, so i figured i would try again on a lower setting, and used Direct Draw 800x600 and loaded the game up this time i saved soon after i got in and kept saving often. As it was my first goal was to get the healing stone and open up the map in town before i started any real quests.

In doing this i crashed 5 more times and i had enough and went to bed. Now today i figured i would try this again and see if i had any problems and its still doing it 6 more crashes to desk top and i have no clue why.

As for my system.

MB NFORCE2 A7N8X DELUXE ASUS
VGA PWRCLR|RADEON 9700PRO128M RTL
DirectDraw
Version 5.3.0000000.900
Primary Device RADEON 9700/9500 SERIES (Omega 2.4.43)
CPU AMD 2500/333 ATHLON XP BARTON
2 512MB DDRAM 32MX8 PC-3200C2 CORSAIR
HD 120GB WD 72R WD1200JB 8MB-CACHE
C: Hard Disk 19.53 GB
D: Hard Disk 92.25 GB
CDRW 52x24x52 LITE ON
OS Win XP pro SP1 with admin rights
DirectX 9.0
Colour depth 16 bit, but i do use 32 bit when i can.

This is only my 7th game on the system right now and other then a few crashes on Gamespy i have not had any problems with any of my other games as of yet or my system. I really dont have a clue as to whats going on because i dont get any errors just a crash to desk top and there really did seem to be anything that was going on in the game to sat that was a problem either. The only thing that i could say some of them have in common is that i was running at the time of most of the crashes though this was not the case in all.

I will spend sometime going thru past posts, and see if there is a problem on my end in anyways but i dont think so.

Thanks 4nE

Hi RBL4NiK8r,

First of all I want to tell you that you certainly need to play in 16 bit, not 32 bit.

Did you check out the following in our Technical Support FAQ?

5) Problem: Random crashes
We have had a number of reports on random crashes. Most of these could be solved by doing one of the following things :

* Make sure all your drivers are up to date and you have the latest service packs and windows updates installed.
* Turn down the windows hardware acceleration of the sound driver down by one notch.
* Make sure the color depth of your desktop is set to 16 bits.
* Make sure the integrity of your files is not compromised by executing a scandisk.
* Make sure you have no other applications running in the background (e.g. antivirus, ICQ,...)
* Make sure you have enough free hard disc space
* Make sure you have full read/write access to the folder where you installed Divine Divinity

You also might want to check if there is a file called error.txt in the run folder of the folder where Divine Divinity was installed, as it might contain helpful hints.

Could you please try this out, and let us know if this solved your problem.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Well thanks for getting back to me, but i am still getting that though a little less then before. First off i did try lower settings, but i am not going to play in software or 640x480, i didnt put this system together to go back in time. As for smoothness that i have been keeping off and it dose seem to help some and i have tried D3D,and DirectDraw and i can play for a few hours and then poof to desk top just like before or a few times it happened right after i started up from a saved game. And yes i have the CD in and no its not a hacked saved game, and i have also skip the test as it is i cant run the test when i am playing in D3D.

As it stands right now the only thing thats running in the background is my motherboard monitor and i cant see that being a problem, and i didnt have any anti-virus programs running at the time i was playing.

When it comes to 16 bit i have been running all my games in 16 bit, i do a lot of work with map editors for other games and some of them will only run in 32 bit and i also have a few then will only run in 16 bit so i do go back and forth between both a lot, but so far i have not forgot to change over YET.

As for FAQ
5) Problem: Random crashes

I have all the latest drivers and SP1 is in for XP and i keep up to date with all crits. BTW i didnt load any games on here untill i had all of the drivers, also being that this is only 2 weeks old, it dont have alot of trash on it like my other PC did when i first got the game lastyear.

Also before i installed this i defraged D:Drive (thats where this is) as i do whenever i load a new game not really sure if that ever helped any, but i got in the habit of doing that years ago and still do it today. I did a scandisk lastnight before i started playing again and there is nothing wrong there.

As for the last 2 in there, i have over 70gigs of free HD space on D:Drive where DD is. I have full read/write access to the folder where DD is.

Turn down the windows hardware acceleration of the sound driver down by one notch, i had this done already and keep it low.

As for error.txt i have not seen one as of yet but will post if i do see one and whats in it.

One thing i will say is that 60% of the time it crashes or more seems to take place when i am in my inventory screen, either buying, or selling, or just looking at stuff that the Merchant have to sell. A few times when i was running, or walking it would crash. And so far that i can reacall only 2 times in battle which btw is why i am back here now, i had 10 scorpin traps running around the orc camp and was getting some great EXP and POOF back to desk top yet again now i was laying back so i didnt really see much other then the EXP comming up on the screen when they killed something and at that time i was only going for gold that was dropped not picking up weapons or armor unless it was really good.

What i dont get is that i am not doing anything thats really taxing my system to cause a crash when playing, and with playing some of my other games, over the past 2 weeks i have not had any problems with them and some of them demand a lot more resorces then this game, at lest thats the way i see it.

Other games i have on here right now.

Rise of Nations
Warzone 2100
Postal 2
UT 2003
GTA Vice City
Neverwinter Nights

One thing i may do is load Throne of Darkness and see if i have any problems with that being that both are running the same type of game engine for the most part.

Thanks 4nE

Well a little update, my longest in game time was about 4 hours and i had a crash to desk top so far i still think most of the crashes seem to be when i am either buying or trading something, or right after i pick something up to read what it is, and to figure out if its any good.

What i have been doing to get around this is saving often and between this and the fact that i am kind of happy with the armor and weapons i have until i reach lvl 65, (lvl 45 now) i have been selling more then reading everything and i spend less time in that screen, or try to make it less since that seems to be were most of my problem is. Also i save before and right after i talk to someone i am about to buy or sell items from.

The only changes that i made since my first post has to do with smoothness being off ALL the time and i do go back and forth betweeen Direct Draw and D3D cant tell whats better or lasts longer in game play right now, and i dont bother to test either.

I still think this is a good game but i do not like the fact that most of the time i stop playing it has to do with a crash to desk top, and not that i am tired of playing <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sleepey.gif" alt="" />

It is my experience that the game crashes for me when you save or load a lot (i think 12 or more) in a certain period of time. (1.5 minutes) I have 1.34 patch, try spacing your time interval of saving and maybe loading.

*could change the refresh rate of your screen (by monitor or graphics card)

This is SpArTa!! oh im sorry, I must have took a wrong turn..somewhere...(runs away)

I agree with uh, Virgo_Bluefire. That seemed to be one of 2 problems I had that made me crash.
