I'm starting a new mage character (Steve Puppykiller, 23rd most evilist of mages), and I want to save as many skill points as possible for combat-helpful skills early on. I know where there's a free skillbook, but getting to it requires opening a door that requires Lockpick level 2. I know that later on there's a unique item which always grants +1 Lockpick. If +1 Lockpick can appear on a random store-bought, it'd be very helpful.

What level do +skill items start appearing in the shops? I know they start randomly dropping around level 10 or 11. I just don't know if Lockpick is a skill which can normally appear on items.

I am planning to max out Lockpick later anyway, so it might not mater, but it'd be nice to have a bit more of an edge earlier.

Don't think I've ever saw anything with lockpick.
I've seen +1 mind read, charm, stun arrows and poison arrows and that is about it.
Well at least that is all I have from all hundreds of items I have in my battle tower chest.

I got a Rush Attack bonus on a bracelet (from a chest) on level 5 or 6. Skill bonuses start becoming more common (though still relatively rare) about level 9 or 10; I didn't notice a significant difference between shop and random loot occurrence. I've also had Jump Attack, Ranger Strength, Summon Ghost and a couple others I don't recall specifically (I have not seen Lockpick yet, though).

You wont find any + lock pick accessories from chests or merchants. The only +1 lock pick necklace is from Jagon in temple of doom, looted from his loot bag after he dies. The necklace is needed to complete the "Wanted" quests in broken valley. If you decide to keep it, then you wont be able to complete the quest

Skill points is usually enough even if you decide to max your lock pick in the early days. You just need to determine which is your major skill and focus on that few skills. If you are playing a pure mage, which my pure mage definition is not relying on weapon at all with just spamming magic skills only, your main dps skill should be magic missile. I try increase rank for both magic blast and fire ball to 13, where their cd is still stuck at 15 secs. So ironically magic missiles is the best skill you can spam with only 1 secs cd. And you wont need weapon mastery at all and that will save you up on a lot skill points.

I'm sure most of the gear has randomly specifications!

I found skillpoints on gear like +1 to Wisdom (Rothman's bow + a on a Ring) and +2 to Wisdom (Amulet of the North), +1 to 2-handed weapon expertise (Arben's sword), +1 to Ranger Strength (David's Gauntlets), +2 to Single-handed expertise (Brideblade, Seth's sword), +1 to Confusion on an Axe from one of the guys before I go in the Maxos Temple (Marius, etc) ...
Also the weapon of Talana ("Witch's Slayerbane of the Mage Priest") have a skillpoint, but don't remember what kind of skill...
Rabbit's Power Belt of Aleroth from "Louis' Stash" (level 5 belt) have a +1 to Evade.
The "(Magical)Striking Plain Pewter Band of the Warrior Gods" I found have a +1 to Magic Missile +
the "Fearsome Oriental Gold Earrings of Aleroth" : +1 to Fear ...

And Jagon's Amulet +1 to Lockpick : I used this early in the game for an extra point for a while to open chests and later on I give the necklage away to solve the quest wink

That's all I found for now in my second playround, now at level 16, just come to Sentinel Island and do almost all quests in Brocken Valley....

Thanks, that's what I figured. I may as well wait until I get that necklace before bothering with that lock. I might keep the necklace anyway, there's more than enough to over-level yourself too much.

All of those things you listed always have those +skills, none were random +skills, although random skills do exist pretty early on (I've seen +1 Fireball and +1 Ranger Surprise on jewelery at level 3).

The only random +skills you mentioned were:

The "(Magical)Striking Plain Pewter Band of the Warrior Gods" I found have a +1 to Magic Missile +
the "Fearsome Oriental Gold Earrings of Aleroth" : +1 to Fear ...

Certain skills like weapon mastery and lock pick will only appear on some drop items by particular npc. You usually find those items in white names which 2 or more enchantment slots. But you will never find them in normal locked chest loot and merchants goods.

I get bangle with +1 stun arrow around level 2, and bought a +1 wisdom ring around lvl 2 or 3 as well. Those are common skills which can be found through accessories. Currently I had wisdom at 2+6, and mindread 1+3, where just need swapping when mindread is needed.

its one of the guys on the wanted list in broken valley, kill him and his ring gives a +1 to lockpick.
