PLEASE HELP....what do I do with the 4 gargoyls to open the gate up after climbing the wood path
and ladders

There is a pressure plate at the front (IIRC) of each statue; activate each of them (the smoke from their mouths changes colour) and the gate will open. I don't know if the order matters; I went from the first one you encounter and activated them in turn towards the gate (after first checking the area for loot).

If you look at the first gargoyle you will notice that it's looking at another one and that one is looking at another on and so on. You need to activate the pressure plate on each of the gargoyles starting with the first one you encounter. That's the order they need to be activated.
