Hi everyone. I just got the game today. Played the starting area and I am very excited. This game reminds me a lot of Gothic 3- which was my 1st RPG. So, I cannot wait to explore the world of Divinity II.

Now to topic, I like the skill system, but as I do not know how much skill points I will have by the end of the game, and what skills I should max out or put points in, some help will be appreciated.

I am trying to make any of the following builds-

1) Like the main character of the Witcher game- a slight Jack-of-all-trades type of character. I know I will be weak in any one of the three classes, but if I can get by through the game with such a build, I would not mind. Some basic melee and some basic magic skills with a hint of ranged.

2) A Ranger-Mage hybrid. This type of classes generally have high survivability with medium damage.

3) A Rogue-Mage hybrid. A class with high melee damage and some magic damage and supportive magic, with some thief-like skills. Low survivability but high damage.

I know that the last decision is mine only, but I was hoping I could get some advice and guidance from the more experienced players here. If you can make any one of the three builds I have mentioned, it would be great, and if you think my builds can not be done, please let me know.

Thank you in advance.

Once you get the battle tower, about half way through the game, you can unlearn all your skills and reassign the points if you want to alter your build or concentrate on the skills you fine most effective.

Mixed class characters are probably the most common, though I think one style tends to be dominant. I started with a duel wielding warrior that began combat with a bow (and found it very handy in certain circumstances), but late in the game I primarily use a bow for breaking barrels and crates, etc.

I'm not sure if the jack of all trades would be a great build (though I may be biased, since I usually play a warrior / paladin type character). Lots of mages use a bow during the cooldown period, or archers use spells for an extra attack against strong opponents, etc. However, if you are going do any significant melee fighting, I'm not sure there is much point having two different types of ranged attacks. I have a fair number of unassigned stat points, though, so at least late in the game it wouldn't hurt to have attacks based on strength, dexterity and intelligence (and you can find many melee weapons with some or all of their damage magic based, so you wouldn't need as high a strength even playing a warrior).

Thank you very much for your reply, specially for the links. I have checked them, and I have checked some other topics as well. I think I will be going for the 3rd build- Rogue-Mage hybrid for my 1st run.

So, I think I will focus on an Intelligence based character as I have seen in the 'Character Optimization' topic.

Just one question- until I get the Battle Tower, except my Dual-Wielding and support magic / skills, what offensive spell should I invest in? About this, the opinion seems to be mixed. I was thinking about the Magic Missile spell, but bows seem to do the same thing. I will use ranged attacks mainly for pulling / weakening enemies before they get to me. So, any advice on that would be helpful.

Not having played a mage, I think Firewall would be the best non-arrow-like spell to use, which gives a high damage, short range area effect around the caster (short compared to an arrow, anyway; I tried it once and IIRC the range was 2 or 3 times what you could reach with a one-handed sword).

The walkthrough contains the description and details of all the skills / spells, with comments on their effectiveness. I didn't read through them all, but with the ones I did check the comments seem generally reasonable.
