Save before trying stuff like that, and you can re-load if you get caught.
If you place a container (chest, sack of grain, etc.) in your inventory, open it and drag-and-drop items into it, it is not considered stealing. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> Taking items out of the container is, though, so make sure you are alone.
