I'm very early on in the game right now. The amount of locked stuff is staggering. I can put up with locked chests, but I got into the dungeon near the starting town (a trapdoor on a hill with some goblins inside) and wham, a closed door halfway in, and no key on any of the goblins I slew.

Is lockpick skill a must to have in this game? How much am I missing here?

I've seen 2 types of locks that can't be opened:
1) lock says that your lockpick skill is not high enough.
2) lock that says it can't be opened with lockpicking.

Type 2 requires a key. Then there are other doors that must be opened with levers, buttons or passwords.

I find lockpicking useful. Some of the wisdom out there says to wait until about 10th lvl and then max it and go back and open every chest you missed (due to treasure scaling to your level). I have been keeping it in line with my combat skills and have been happy with it that way too, but I gravitate toward thief/assassin types anyway and can't stand to let a nice chest sit idle. wink

Some keys can be hidden under or behind crates and barrels, held in the hands of skeletons or sitting on chairs or desks, etc. A bow is handy to clear out breakable stuff, mostly for loot, but sometimes to reveal otherwise obscured things.

You can finish game without the skill if it was your question.

Haha, I have the opposite problem. I have a lot of keys in my quest section, but no doors/chests to open xD And I don't remember where I got the keys.

I also ended up with a surplus of keys. Some chests, etc, can be lockpicked before you find the associated key.
