The majority of my equipment I got from random loot, chests and the occasional quest reward (my first choice was experience, though, when there was an option). I did purchase some equipment, though more so near the end of the game. Have you maxed Lockpick? Some people wait to learn that skill, to get better quality loot if they open locked chests at a higher level. By then you basically end up with more gold (which is easy to get, especially after getting the battle tower) and possibly equipment upgrades that you obviously were not in great need of, if you could wait to open the chests. Have you gone back and checked the merchants in the village since getting to level 7? Merchant inventories should be reset each time you level. Other than the smith, there is the jewelry merchant near the church, 3 in the Black Boar inn... It may take another couple levels to get there, but there is a smith near the top of Lovis tower who will trade with you. If you save before getting too near a merchant/chest or running the crosshairs over them/it, you can check the inventory and reload if there is nothing of value. I wouldn't waste a lot of time reloading, though, especially since the game seems to keep track of how long it has been since you last loaded the game, and tends to give you better loot if you don't reload. Due to the random item generation, though, you can get better loot sometimes if you try a few times, which can come in handy for chests that always give a good quality item (ie the chest that will be opened if you mindread Lovis) or boss type opponents that always drop something when defeated (save just before finishing them off), etc. Have you finished off all the places and quests that you can in the starting section of Broken Valley? Past where you meet the dragon knight, the next easiest areas would be along the mountains to the south east (north of the path going by Lovis' tower), and to the west and up the northern path through the mountains (level 6/7 goblins in both sections). After that, the derelict tunnels would probably be easiest (with lots of chests to loot), with the two goblin entrances already cleared above ground. Welcome to the forum.

You can learn lockpicking the same way you increase any other skill. In the skill list on PC, select a skill, hit the arrow button under the icon to add skill points (up to the skill level cap, your available number of skill points and any character level restrictions), and the button at the bottom right of the window to apply. On the Xbox, in the skill list hit A to show the skill description, and A again to apply skill points; when you hit B to exit you are given the choice to apply the points (A) or cancel (B).
BTW, I did leave a couple chests for later. One of the chests under the church always gives body parts, so I left that chest until I had explored enough of Broken valley to find the crystal skull required to control a necromancer created creature. However, even being at a higher level when I returned, I had still found better stuff by then anyway, so waiting didn't help (then again, in that case getting lower level parts earlier would not have helped either).
Some side quests you just need to explore everywhere, and you will eventually find the person or item you are after. With Brave Sir Robin, the creature you need to defeat is not too far from the quarry (south east of where you meet the dragon knight, then cross the river and south west); you'd probably want to be at least level 11 or 12 for that area/quest.

In the mirror room (where you need to find what is different between the 2 sides) breaking barrels, etc, can clear out the room and make it easier to compare. If you want a hint, you don't necessarily have to focus all of your attention on the floor... Or just the solution straight ahead from the entrance there are a couple chairs and chests. Before the chairs there are a couple half height walls with railings dividing that alcove from the main part of the room. On one side there is a cup between a couple railing, near the wall IIRC. If you are in the maze, look for pressure plates to open up a couple secret passages (which should be obvious on the map). One pressure plate is on the wall beside a chest... If you have defeated Amdusias, check out the contents on the blood alter.

Exit the game completely, then start it again and reload your save. Hopefully you have not re-saved the game outside that room, and deleted/overwritten the previous save... There is a possible bug a few people have encountered in the PC version; sometimes when quick saving/loading indoors ladders can get removed or doorways sealed. If you notice this right away, then exiting the game, restarting and reloading the save should work normally, but if you don't notice and save again it gets written into the save file. Missing ladders in dungeon...stuck inside! There was also a possible problem in the original US Xbox release (since patched) that could alter your character's location when loading a save that had been over-written (exiting back to the dashboard and starting the game again would fix the problem, and always creating new saves would avoid it).

After getting the battle tower you can visit the trainer to increase the level cap of your preferred weapon specialty or favourite combat skills. Before getting the battle tower I was using two axes. One of the first places I went afterwards was the sinister cave in the fjords, and on finishing that I started using Barnabus' hammer, which was a significant upgrade from my main axe. I found another hammer shortly after that which was almost as good, which overall gave me a pretty good damage boost fairly quickly. Charms and enchantments can also make a difference, even with the same weapon(s). The type and level of your opponent comes into play for damage calculations. Character Optimization

I didn't use two handed swords, but I think that damage range sounds about right for that part of the game.
Have you learned Bleed (up to level 10, when you have the level requirements and skill points), in addition to boosting two handed weapon expertise?
Other than random drops or loot from chests, once you get the battle tower there are a couple merchants you can check each time you level for better equipment (save before running your crosshairs over them, and you can reload until you get something you can use). There are two black ring soldiers in the bunker where you need to get to to turn off the anti-dragon barriers; they will surrender, and one of them has weapons, armour and sometimes jewelry for sale. After that you can continue up the path past the depleted ore mine; if you keep to the left path when it splits, you go up to High Hall, there there is another merchant after you do a quest there. Taking the right path leads down to the Champion Harbor; there is a smith inside the building, and if you bring at least one of each of the 3 different zeppelin parts (found in wyvern nests) to the zeppelin master, you can travel to Aleroth, where there are 2 merchants who sell legendary quality items (as does the one in High Hall, at high character levels).
In addition to boosting the relevant stats to raise your melee, ranged and magic resistances, you could add enchantments to improve your resistances and/or your total hit points.
There may be easier opponents in another area you could do first, as well.
One skill point in Evade is helpful for melee attacks (the effect per point is not as good if you want to raise it to higher levels).
Have you invested in Life Leech? (at least 1 point)
Have you put any skill points into Regenerate? Not getting hit is best, not getting hurt is good, but failing either of those, healing faster is helpful.
Learn Mana Efficiency (level 5 drops mana cost for spells, and summoning your creature, in half) and Healing (level 1 is probably good enough).
If you have any jewelry with enchantment slots that you expect to be able to hang onto for awhile, and some spare malachite gems, you could add a couple high level healing auras. If you reload at malachite veins until you get at least 1 gem (2 are not hard to get, 3 can be had with a little patience or luck, and 4 are possible but rare), and get all you can from quests and merchants, there should be plenty. I missed a couple veins and still acquired 28 throughout the game. Malachite gems are needed for all level 10 enchantments (so I stuck with level 9 most of the time, since they have almost as much of an effect but use common ingredients), or for any healing aura (so I only used level 10 healing auras, after being lucky enough to find that enchantment formula in the cellar of the Broken Valley enchanter).

If you've continued as a mage, I imagine you're probably boosting intelligence a lot more than strength, so you would do better with weapons that primarily do magical damage. The initial class choice determines your starting weapon / skills / stats, but does not restrict you from developing your character however you wish, and once you've gone up a few levels your choice in Farglow no longer matters. Bleed and the weapon expertise would help, but there may be better places to put your skill points, if the sword is more of a backup. The official "ULTIMATE MAGE" guide

Head to Aleroth (from the harbour zeppelin pad) and talk to Zandalor in the ministry to get the shield.
