Where are you? What level / class is your character?

Generally, if a particular area is too tough, try a different direction. There should be areas and opponents more appropriate to your level. Each time you level you can go check merchants, as well, to see if they have an equipment you can upgrade (most of the equipment I used was found, but I did purchase some, particularly at the very start and near the end of the game).

Main plot quests can wait until you have explored everywhere and done many or all of the side quests. A general rule of thumb is if the head dragon slayer (or the dragon knight, after you meet her, or the mage Zandalor) tell you to do something, feel free to delay as long as you wish, or can, before doing it. If you are told not to do something, though, it would be a good idea to make a new save before trying it.

If you save before getting too near a merchant/chest or running the crosshairs over them/it, you can check the inventory and reload if there is nothing of value. I wouldn't waste a lot of time reloading, though, especially since the game seems to keep track of how long it has been since you last loaded the game, and tends to give you better loot if you don't reload. Due to the random item generation, though, you can get better loot sometimes if you try a few times, which can come in handy for chests that always give a good quality item or boss type opponents that always drop something when defeated (save just before finishing them off), etc.
At the start of the game this can be quite helpful, though.

A bow is very handy, even playing a warrior or mage character. As a duel wielding warrior, at the start of the game I used a bow to bring opponents to me (doing a bit of damage in the process) and switched to melee when they got close. Even through the middle of the game a bow was useful (didn't invest in any ranger type skills), though later I pretty much just used it for breaking crates, etc.

The very first time I began Divinity II on "low" difficulty I had also problems to be alive!
After a time playing and replaying this game I can now play without many problems on "high" difficulty!

Try for sure many different strategies by killing enemies! wink

I use the whole game a bow and find it useful. I take at least 2 points in Ranger Stealth the fast I can wink
Personally I find the Skill Wirlwind more useful for breaking crates. Plus is good if many enemies surrounds you: do a wrilwind and jump back or forward, away of the group of enemies.

And furthermore I use a Two-handed Sword for melee combat and sometimes an Axe or One-handed Sword.

If you have problems because the combat is too hard, try Mage Skills like Magic Blast and later on Firewall and the Ranger Skill Explosive Arrows!

Good luck!
