Any way to keep the gem without failing the quest? And by keep, I mean actually keep the gem itself, not just sell it. If you kill Vacca for it, are there any consequences besides failing the quest? Does he die anyways from the gas, or does that not affect Sentinel Island?

There are no consequences for killing Vacca besides failing the quest. The gas effects Sentinel Island, so presumably he does die anyway, unless he escapes the island or has a really good seal on his hatch.

How do you access the area behind the firewalls in Mahalath's room in the cave? Or is that only available if you side with her specifically? If so, is there anything valuable back there, or is it just random treasure (if any at all)?

EDIT: Also, how does the Legend of the Ancient Mariner guy survive the poison gas? Or is that shipwreck colony somehow spared?

I don't think there is any way to get behind the firewalls, regardless of whether you side with one of the sisters or neither: forlorn cave.

The guy that gives you the ancient mariner book quest moves up beside the teleporter shrine near the locked door at the end of one branch of the path leading up to the battle tower, which is above the level of the gas.

That's weird, that the firewalls can't be dispelled. Especially since there are enemies beyond it on the minimap.

im still wondering that my self theres got to be a way to get to them but i dont see any way how to.
