Currently still level one and a cool 1415 XP in debt. If I keep going the way I'm going, will I ever actually reach level 2, or should I cool it on the mind reading?

Actually, mindreading first isn't a bad idea. As you level you get less experience for defeating opponents. If you mindread first, you will get more experience than leveling and then mindreading, since you will be paying off the debt at a lower level.

I mindread fairly liberally, and didn't have any problems (though fought a bunch of goblins and was level 2 before I entered the Broken Valley village), but playing again I would not do as many mindreads where you just get loot (though some of those can get you skill or stat books, etc).

If you're worried, you might also want to save and mind-read a bunch of people, and load after you identify the ones who are thinking stuff like "Nice weather today," and only mind-read ones with worthwhile information.

While experience for monsters goes down as you increase in level, experience for completing quests goes up as you increase in level, so the rule of thumb is to kill monsters first, and solve quests after that.

You will want to be level 6 by the time you leave the first part of Broken Valley. I was able to do that, although I now know which ones are worth mind-reading and which ones aren't.

Actually, experience for completing quests is constant (it's still better to concentrate on combat first and delay turning in quests).
Equipment rewards for quests scale to your level, though I almost always took extra experience if that was an option.

Put at least 1 point into "wisdom" to get a tiny bit more of experience points, imho.

At your own ric, though. I found the game a bit harder after I had done this, because I needed that exact point (I felt so) in a different, rather combat oriented field.

But that was just my personal experience.

Yeah, Wisdom isn't worth skill points in my view, early on the skill point is far more valuable than an extra 2% XP. Besides, with careful and diligent exploration, you can find 3 items which give you a total of +4 Wisdom pretty early on.

Hmmm ... I was doing ALL the possible mindreadings and ALSO reached level 6 or 7 when I leave teh first part of Brocken Valley.
And further on, the so called "not important" mindreads have a low XP dept!! So if you mindread all NPC etc ... the difference between only mindreading what you give a skillpoint/statpoint or some extra loot ... or mindreading ALL isn't high

AND, also, mindreading is FUN delight and give some extra humourous dialogs ! wink

Wisdom is pretty worthless. Especially since you get +Wisdom items. Don't put points in it.

Mindreading, on the other hand, is fun. I mindread everything that moved, and still comfortably hit L35. There are items that give you +Mindreading, too.

Personally, I found mindreading to be one of the most funny parts within the game, too.
