Im making a heavy mage type ive been dropping most of my points in Int with a few in spirit and vitality should i be dropping points in strength/dex for gear requirements? or will i be able to find some stuff that is good and has no requirement. I am going to do a little melee for the mana leach talent.

If you use balanced weapons, you will need about half the strength and dexterity of straight conventional weapons. You can also get weapons where most or all of the damage is magical.
At the end of the game (playing a strength based duel wielding warrior) a couple of pieces of my equipment had stat requirements around 30 (strength), and one was 25 (dexterity, for a bow). Many were only about 10 or 15, though, with a couple less than that. You should have lots of stat points to meet equipment requirements (some decent equipment has relatively low requirements).
You may want a bit of strength and dexterity to boost your melee and ranged resistances, as well. That was the main reason I boosted intelligence, though playing again I think I would see if I could neglect it more, and make due with the lower magic resistance and mana regeneration rate.

Are any of the downloadable armor sets worth picking up?

I have the Gamestop pre-order armour set, but by the time I got around to getting my Xbox online I already had better equipment (it may come in handy for my next character). I didn't get any of the other download sets; they may have saved me a bit of reloading trying to get good equipment in the early to mid game, but I didn't really need any extra help (also, I'm cheap).

New Download Equipment sets for Xbox 360 - At least on the Xbox, the Wild Dwellers sets 1 and 2 are switched opposite from how they are labeled in the PC screenshots.

With the sets available later in the game (after you get the battle tower) I checked them out after collecting all of the pieces, but wasn't tempted away from the random equipment I had. Some people do recommend the archmage set for mages, though, and several people that posted in the topic Finished Divinity II ? Tell us with which stats have used some or all of these sets.

Archmage set isn't actually all that good. My equipment from level 20 was better then that set. That was a disappointment. My advice find as much armours with as many open slots as possible and make your own! Much more effective because you know what you want.

In fact i didn"t need armor at all
I only used boots and armor for upper body without helmet and all earriengs and things like that
I was too powerful and I never use armor becaose of stats
would you bunny costume if it will make you invincible

As a Mage you really shouldn't need armour but to add ranged resistances and such was always nice to have some open slots to put + to dexterity bonuses. (Can't run from an arrow....weird.)
Or to put + to spirit bonuses.
