Hi everyone! I'm brand new to both this forum and the game, I just gave it a try a few minutes ago. I got to the point in Farglow where I am to speak to three different people to choose my class. Before I do that, I would like to ask for advice here at this forum. I tried to have a look on the board, and also in the wiki, but couldn't find any specific tips for this. I'm sorry if this is something easily found here. So I'm wondering what class to choose. I'm quite experienced with RPGs, mostly TES-series, FF and LotRO, and the warrior class is usually the easiest one in a game. But how hard is mage or ranger? I am tempted to become a mage in this one, but how hard will it be for a Divinity-newbie to play a mage? Should I go for a warrior first? I understand from the woman I spoke to in-game that I can develop all three skills later, but how much later in the game is that? Thanks in advance for any help!

Try all 3 classes in the training area, and see which one you prefer. You can easily adjust your playstyle, stats and skills as you play. From the first time you get stat or skill points (both are available from books and mindreading, as well as leveling), you can learn whatever skills you meet the level requirements for, and apply stat points however you wish. If you keep strength, dexterity and intelligence at least moderate, to boost the respective resistances, etc (or keep a few stat points in reserve), then switching character types shouldn't be terribly difficult, though of course that could mean less points in your primary stat(s). An intelligence based warrior could fairly easily switch to being a mage, and vise versa. There is a skill book in Farglow, if you explore thoroughly. It is on top of the rocks in the middle of the training area, between the lone mage and the camp site. I used it to learn Lockpick, so I could open the chest by the mage trainer. So: warrior, mage or archer?I played a strength based duel wielding warrior, that used a bow occasionally (handy in the beginning of the game to draw opponents to you, and get some damage in first). I've heard mages are easier, especially later in the game, but I didn't have any trouble that trying a different area first or upgrading equipment, etc, couldn't take care of. For the creature (that you will eventually get, about level 12, or so), I started off having him as a warrior, but later found it was much more effective as a ranger, and later switched it to a mage. You will eventually be able to unlearn all your skills and reinvest the skill points, about half way through the game. The cost for doing so doubles each time, so practically you can only do this at most about 3 or 4 times (once or twice should be plenty, though). Stat points can not be redistributed. You can really lay the smack down with a Mage, I have found on my second playthrough that so far my melee character seems easier, other people rave about ranged. I suggest make three characters and play for a couple of hours each. I have yet to try ranged, but I'm really looking forward to that too. Hope you get one that suits

Thanks! I think I will give mage a try, then. And perhaps make him a Battlemage, with some warrior skills.

I won't go for a pure mage for my first playthrough, I think that will be too challenging. I made a mage, but I'm also going for some warrior skills. I'm only level four so far, though, and I do find the game a bit hard. That is a good thing, though, I imagine it will become easier as I progress in levels and learn the game better.

Hm, that's different. Usually, in RPGs, an all-rounder (battlemage type, usually) is one of the easiest for a first playthrough.

I have not tried an intelligence based warrior, but I can not see how adding some mage skills wouldn't make it more effective than a pure warrior (at least after the better spells become available). Since there are weapons that have part or most of their damage magic based, you don't really have to compromise on stats anywhere, since intelligence would be the primary stat for melee or magic attacks. You might need to balance vitality and spirit more than a pure warrior (but then you wouldn't need as much mana either), but with magic for ranged attacks (or a magic bow) you would not need as much dexterity. Strength helps with regeneration, but between the healing spell, regeneration skill and jewelry auras, you shouldn't need strength just for regeneration.

Played a warrior my first time around. KICK ASS. Most fun by far. BUT playing a mage nothing gets close to you. And everyone who runs at you dies almost instantly:)
