I just purchased this game from Direct2Drive. I get an error message after the credits page that says "Speedtree" in the middle of the screen. The game crashes every time I try to boot. I'm on Windows 7 with and ATI card (no crossfire) and Intel processor, all of my drivers are up to date. I've downloaded and updated my phsyx, directx 9.0c, and Visual C++ redistributable files.

After reading all of the "First Aid" posts I assumed I was having a codec issue. I installed the k-lite codec pack and told it to remove all of the other codecs it found. After that didn't work I tried uninstalling the k-lite pack and just used the basic windows codec pack (found here http://download.cnet.com/Windows-Essentials-Media-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10662709.html).

I'm launching in administrator with disable desktop compatibility.

The thing that seems like it's directed to my problem in the first aid post

If the intro movie does not play, you need to:
download and install the WM9 codecs from Microsoft's website
download and install the hotfix that is described in this Microsoft article: download for 32bit XP - download for 64bit XP

I can't install the WM9 codec's because I'm on windows 7 and it says it can only be done on XP. The hotfix that is described is specifically towards people who have "never installed WMP 10 or higher" I currently have 12.

The only thing that has changed after everything I've tried (I've attempted to launch the game after each thing I changed) is now that I have the windows codec pack it asks if it should use "ffdshow" when the game starts. I've said yes and no with no luck.

Tell me there is something I've missed, I'd really like to play this game (My friends don't understand when I'm yelling "OMG I CAN BE A DRAGON!!!1!" over skype).

P.S. Has anyone had luck with returns? I've never tried to return a game I bought digitally, but this has me pulling my hair out.

Have you tried Direct2Drive's support, or checked for a FAQ or forum there? You could also try emailing support@larian.com.
I am not familiar with D2D's return policy, but I'd assume you'd have to start with a support request to justify a refund. The Dragon Knight Saga, a remastered version of D2:ED with the add-on included, will be released in a couple weeks. If you can not get the game running and can not get a refund, a store credit could work.

They aren't the same issue, but did you try going through the topics below?

Never ending loading screen. 100% of the time.

Crash on 'new game' load screen.

Can you play the intro video in WMP?
Try renaming the file to get the game to skip it, assuming it reaches that point.

Theory on my CTD at the Start New Game Load Screen

Ffdshow is a set of DirectShow video codecs, which can either be install alone, or come bundled with a media player or video editing application.

You could also try to run the game in winXP compatibility mode.

I can play the video, I also tried renaming it to skip it, but the game still stopped working. I don't even know why I tried it, but I have VLC mediaplayer set as my default for the movie files in game, so I changed that to WMP default and it still didn't work.

As far as the two threads go, I don't have and AMD processor or an Nvidia card, so I can't turn off physX. I also never make it to a loading screen, but I'll read through the Never ending loading screen thread.

As far as ffdshow goes, should I tell it to use it or not?

Also, I can't load a save game because I never get to a screen where I could load it.

I have until tomorrow night before D2D won't consider me returning it, so any long-shot ideas people have are more then welcome.

You could try uninstalling ffdshow (with using it or not having the same results), but this doesn't seem to be a codec problem.

There will be a D2:ED patch released after FoV and DKS are out (included with FoV), and a large D2:ED+FoV to DKS conversion patch (which would have to come through D2D for that release). With a limited return time, though, it would probably be safer to return it and wait for DKS.

Unfortunately, I don't know of anything else to suggest that you haven't tried or isn't in any of the topics already referred to.
